wp" 16 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, March 28, 1995 _--- & FARM NEWS < New strategies from local Ag. Federation The Durham Region Federation of Agriculture is developing a new three pronged plan that will focus on education, communications and marketing. This plan is being developed by a steering committee under the direction of Federation president Dennis Yellowlees of Nestleton. In an interview with the Citizen last week, Mr. Yellowlees said that agriculture is the second largest industry (after autos) in Durham Region. However, only about three per cent of Durham's population are involved directly in agriculture. He said the steering committee has determined there must be better communication between the various farm and rural organizations and between the agricultural community and municipal politicians on such things as land use, planning, regulations and taxation. "We are going to make sure councils know our views," he said. In the education area, this will be directed at school-aged children as they "are the consumers of the future and already have influence in what their families purchase. Enhanced education also ties in with more communications with non-farm neighbours and urban consumers in an effort to improve their knowledge of what farmers are doing with land stewardship, dedication to producing top quality products and reaching the goals of a healthy and sustainable environment. Mr. Yellowlees said there is a need to be more aggressive in marketing Ontario farm products, and the need for value added processing in Durham Region which will help the local economy as well as producers. Taking advantage of Durham's close proximity to the large population in Metro Toronto is also something that must be developed. "The markets are available and_. we have the resources to deliver a high quality product. New marketing initiatives must be developed that ensure increased fresh marketing sales," he said. The steering committee has come up with a mission statement that reads as follows: "the agricultural community will be a healthy, growing and vital part of Durham Region. We will accomplish this through education, two way communication and marketing of the image and products of the agri community."
