These three corporations recognize that Silken Laumann made an honest mistake when she tested positive for a doephedrine) found in many over the counter cold medicines. Even world class athletes like Laumann are entitled like the rest of us, to come down with a cold once in a while. IDA, Subaru and McDonald's are major corporate sponsors for the world champion rower and all have indicated . they will not be tefminating any contracts because of this positive test for a b d This won't bring back the Pan-Am games gold medal. Laumann and three team-mates lost in the wake of the positive test. Major corporations, always so very mindful of who they pay to endorse their products, are known to run like the wind at even the hint of a scandal, What Laumann did in taking Benadryl Decongestant for her cold, and on the advice of her doctors, was not scandalous. Perhaps as some have pointed out, she should have known it contains ephedrine, a banned substance for international athletes. But as she so aptly put it, "I'm not a chemist." Silken Laumann is an athlete of the highest calibre and courage. After that horrendous leg injury, she refused to take legal pain killers before competing and winning a bronze medal in the Olympics. She is a credit to her sport, her country and herself. She is as fine a spokesperson as could be found by any corporation. Good for her major sponsors in recognizing this and for not cutting her loose in the wake of a positive test for a substance that's in the systems of half of the population (at least) of Canada, especially during the cold season. As parents we have chosen to send our children to an independent school. As Ontario residents we also pay our property taxes, over 60% of which (some regions pay up to 76%) are directed towards the public educational system. This prompts me to ask three questions: 1. Why must we direct our school taxes to a school system our children are not enrolled in? Is it fair for the government to dictate which school will receive our hard earned tax dollars. That to me is not democracy in action. 2. Why is the government not recognizing the importarit contribution independent schools are making in this province? Children attending independent schools are Canadian Citizens and will graduate with an education that either meets or exceeds the standards put out by the Ministry of Education. Is this prefer for our children, or does the government of this province no longer feel that this decision belongs to the parents? Eight out of ten provinces believe the decision belongs to the parents and so with the exception of Ontario &New Brunswick, all offer funding to their independent schools. So why is Ontario so slow to see the light? Many independent schools operate at half the cost of the public school system yet, if the independent schools were to close down and their students were to enter the public system the costs would be staggering to the educational budget which is already overloaded. Yet if the government were to offer partial funding, say 50% of the independent school budget, the impact on the 'sight public educational budget would be less than 1%, small potatoes when confronted with the above alternative. So what's the answer - why not offer to redirect taxes to the educational system of one's choice and as Mary Johansen suggested in her letter to the editor a few weeks ago, why not use a voucher system whereby education taxes can be directed to the system of one's choice. There is a solution to this injustice, we hope the Supreme Court of Canada will not lose of our Canadian Democratic Heritage and perhaps when the case goes to court in the Fall of 1995 we'll see justice prevail after all. Adelaide Dekonning Port Perry, Ontario Successful Heart and Stroke drive not a form of discmmination? Independent schools are legitimate vital comp in the educational system of the province. They too play an important role as does the public system, but why should they be treated differently? 8, As parents should we not "have the right to choose which educational system we would To The Editor: Special thanks to Audrey Hall, The Heart and Stroke who convened the coin box Foundati i for the paign, and to the Township of Scugog, wish to who accepted these coin boxes thank the 21 captains and 160 during the month of February. canvassers, who gave valuabl Appreciation is also time and effort to this year's paign.
