Love of playing music lasts a lifetime by Heather McCrae For the past two years a group of musicians from the Uxbridge- Scugog area have reserved their Tuesday evenings for a night of music. Meeting either at the homes of Edna Beckett or Doreen Adam, these eight players range in age from the late thirties to eighty- years of age. Known as the "Scugog Strings" they have a lot of fun playing the cello, violin and viol. Bob Cawker is one of those dedicated people. The Scugog Island farmer has been playing the violin for, over 65 years and now, at age 80, is still hard at it. "I like all types of music" he told the Citizen recently in an interview at his home. Playing the violin, saxophone and clarinet, he's had quite the musical career. He was 14 when he learned how to play the violin. During the early thirties when he was attending Port Perry High School, Bob and a group of boys formed their own orchestra. John Orde, one of his best buddies, was a very gifted musician and part of the musical ensemble, too. "John certainly had more talent than I and gave me a lot of pointers to know what was right and wrong" he said, adding "John and his brother, Phil, still live in Port Perry and we've been friends all our lives". In his mid-twenties Bob left to work in the hardware business in Toronto. But he never neglected his music. Every night after a day's work he went downstairs in the store playing the clarinet and saxophone. "I taught myself how to play both these instruments just by reading the (instruction) books and from friends who were better than I was -- hiss still are" he grinned. "And I owe what shperiise I have on the violin to Vie Stouffer, who was once the musical director at Port Perry United Church and a great band leader for a number of years too" he said. Bob wasn't the only one gifted musically in his family. His sister, Grace Hastings, was also the music director of the-same church a few years ago, teamed up with her daughter, Gloria Forder, on the organ. "Grace did much more with music than I" he said. Throughout the early forties his musical career flourished with several bands. "Although Turn to page 13 HAUGEN'S CHICKEN BBQ (Hwy. 12 at 7A Manchester) is proud to offer an EASTER SUND.
