Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, April 11, 1995 -- 13 - Couple together again on day war ends. by Margaret Gilham I remember VE Day so very well. My husband Geoffrey Gilham and I had made a pact that on his return from Germany, we would meet in the same house in Wimbleton, London where he had left me a few years before, after travelling through 16 different countries some with the Canadian Army. That's also the reason why we came to Canada in 1953, sailing on Coronation Day. My husband arrived in London the Day before VE Day and I had travelled from our home town in Kent. I could not believe it was so quiet after having everything thrown at us at the South Coast--rockets, V2's, mines, fire-bomb parachutes--you name it, we had it. However, as arranged, we met at the house, and the same landlady, a dear soul, was still in residence. Although the house had been bombed our bedroom was still intact. The next morning the victory was announced about 11 o'clock and everyone poured out into the streets. We could not get back to Kent as all the trains and buses were full. So we stayed another. What a relief. We had both survived the war, I as a nurse and Geoffrey as a captain in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. (Editor's Note: As this year (May 8) is the 50th anniversary of the end of Keep on playing, Bob! From page 12 we were all small bands, we played the 'big band type of music" he reminisced, fondly. After selling the hardware business in 1949 he met his fugure wife, Madeline. The couple married in 1956 and a year later moved to their farm on Scugog Island. Continuing to play the sax and clarinet, Bob joined the band playing at Musselman's Lake, playing alongside Ted Griffin, Bruce Gerrow and Wes Jackson for a few years. Next he switched to the fiddle and you'd often see Bob playing at The Red Barn in Oshawa and A la Ce ll i a COLOST! , ILEOSTOMY, UROSTOMY APPLIANCES 31 Years Experience Now Located in Scugog 15501 East 1/4 Line, Nestieton (905) 986-1164 or Toll Free 1-800-371-0163 Pickup or 1-2 Day Delivery Service the Bayview Club in Whitby. He joined several fiddle clubs in the area and is still a member of the Blue Grass and Port Perry Fiddle Clubs. Now, at 80 years of age, he enjoys playing the violin every week with the "Scugog Strings". "We aren't that good" he said modestly, "but are getting better and have a lot of fun doing it" He tells me the violin and fiddle are both the same instrument, it's just that one is more sophisticated than the other. While Madeline learned how to play the piano by ear when she was young, Bob finally mastered playing the instrument last year at seventy-nine years of age. "She plays the piano pretty well, too" he said. Known throughout Scugog for his musical talents, Bob will be taking part in the music program at the 150th anniversary of the Cadmus- Nestleton Presbyterian Church this fall S.A. Cawker Public School was named after Sam, one of his four brothers who died a couple of years ago. "Grace and | are the only ones left" he said. At 80 years of age, his good health and desire to keep playing are quite remarkable. GUARDIAN DRUGS = Port Perry Pharmacy Ltd. 209 Queen St. 985-2231 SENIORS (65 & up) 10% DISCOUNT All Purchases!
