The Durham Region Health Department has come up with some great ideas on how to prepare healthy lunches for your children. April is Dental Health Month in the Region and the theme is a "New Deal for a Noon Meal," according to Faith Lowman, the Health Department's dental hygienist Not only does the campaign focus on healthy school lunches for the kids, it highlights participation, packaging and prevention of cavities Parents want to provide healthy school lunches for their growing active kids. Nutritious, portable lunches and snacks can be tasty and fun to eat. Meeting these goals takes a bit of planning. Here are a few helpful tips. *plan menu a week in advance and shop just once a week *freeze sandwiches to save prep time *look for in-season fruits and vegetables when you shop * pack a thermos with stew or soup *include in the lunch bag foods that are good for the body and teeth: fresh fruit, bran muffin, cheese and crackers, un-salted nuts, homemade popcorn Be creative. Try one new bread or vegetable each week. Look for un-processed foods--whole grain breads and cereals, fresh fruits and vegetables and foods that are low in fats, salt and sugar. For sandwiches, try low fat fillings such as tuna and salmon, lean luncheon meats such as sliced turkey, chicken breast, beef or ham. v Rp. | Restaurant and Dining Lounge | J Canadian and Dutch Cuigine After 25 Year, we are offering the same quality service we did 25 years ago! Use mustard, lettuce and tomato rather than mayonnaise; add crunchy vegetable sticks and remember that food and drinks with cgffeine such as chocolate bars, hot chocolate, coffee and cola offer little nutritional value. For prevention of cavities, avoid lunch food that contain sugar that may come in the form of white or brown sugar, syrups, honey, molasses. Check the fngredients label on packaged foods. Those that end in "ose" such as sucrose, glucose, dextrose, fructose, maltose are sugar, too It is proven fact that hungry or poorly fed children have trouble contentrating on school work. Some may be too tired to pay attention or they may be too restless or overactive. Foods that are high in sugar can lead to tooth decay and provide little more than "quick energy."
