Monday afternoon. Township Mayor Howard Hall commented that "all (community) boards and (municipal) departménts worked very hard to get this budget down to a zero (tax) increase." "I am very pleased with this budget," he went on, stating that the taxpayers in Scugog are still getting good service with a zero tax increase. He said the council set out last fall to bring in a budget with no tax hikes at the local government level. The budget approved Monday calls for expenditures , of just over $7.7 million, with $3.5 million coming from the tax levy. There will be a slight levy increase this year of $42,000, but this will not impact on the mill rate as it will be covered by natural assessment growth. Homeowners in Scugog will notice an overall tax hike in 1995, however, as the Durham School Board budget will add about $8 to the tax bill on an average hdme assessed at $3600. And Durliam Region is still tinkering with a budget that could add about $14 in regional taxes to the average residential bill. The Durham Education budget for public schools will be $366,181, 900 this year, an actual decrease in spending of about $2.7 million. Scugog trustee Bobbie Drew said capital expenses and grant reduction brought about the slight tax increase. Individual schools in Durham will be getting a three per cent hike in their block budgets for such things as books, equipment, classroom supplies. Mrs. Drew said getting ready for Junior Kindergarten this fall will cost the Durham Board over $8.million for renovations, teachers and transportation. "With the JK program there would have a tax decrease in Durham this year," she said, emphasizing that Junior Kindergarten was brought in by the provincial government.
