April 11,1995 -- 87 What a season for this team - winning all their league games, three gold medals 'at tournaments (Port Perry Tournament in January, Kingston . Tournament in February, Barrie Tournament in March) - winning gold at the League Championships in April and finally their fifth gold medal win at the Regionals in Whitby. All tournaments have been written up in the paper along "with regular league games except for the Barrie tournament. A quick review of that tournaments is as follows: March 10, 11 and 12th the Shepstone girls travelled to Barrie to participate in the 11th Annual Barrie Ringette Tournament. This was a BIG tournament with teams particjpating from' the Bunny to Deb level. There were a total of 10 Petite B teams! First game for our girls was Friday evening vs Pickering. Our girls seemed to have 'first game jitters' but got' their game on track to beat Pickering 3-2. Second game was against Rayside (Sudbury) at 8:30 a.m. Sat. Our. girls won an easy 11-0. Goals and assists were as follows 1st period: Sarah from Shannon and Rhea; Stacey from Katherine; Nicole from'Janna and Stacey. 2nd period: Katherine from Janna and Rhea; Stacey from Sheena and Ashley; Shannon from Lis. Shannon from Rhea and Lisa; Nicole from Stacey; Stacey from Kelly; Sheena from Rhea and Ashley; and Heather from Sheena and Kelly. Third game was 7:45 p.m. Sat. vs Caledonia, Our girls had another easy win - winning 10-1. Goals and assists were as follows: Stacey from Sheenamnd Ashley; Stacey from Kristen and 'Sarah; Rhea from Ashley and Sheena; Rhea from Katherine; Nicole from Stacey and Janna; Stacey from Heather and Sarah; Rhea from Shannon; Stacey from Ashley and Sarah; Nicole from Ashley and Sarah (a short handed goal) unassisted. The fourth game of the tournament Sunday morning was the hi-lite of the tournament! This game still is talked about by the parents as one of the most exciting games they have ever watched. The girls were up against a select B team from Hamilton. Hamilton looked intimidating with everyone in matching jackets, pants, equipment bags etc. A tie or loss meant Port would play in the afternoon for the Bronze medal but a win meant they would play for the Gold vs the team who placed first in the other group of 5 Petite teams. Without a doubt our team rose s From Humble Beginnings: It all started when Vernon Asselstine and "the boys" were looking for better service for their Yamaha snowmobiles, so they went directly to the Yamaha distributor. They suggested that they take on a Yamaha snowmobile dealership. Starting as a part time job for Vernon, Vera and "the boys", it has now grown to full-time employment for' nine people and one or two part time positions year round. Many will remember the one car 'garage with a "barrel stove" for heat. Since then there has been constant change and growth with the most recent expansion being our new showroom which opened one year ago. Asselsti the name suggests is a family owned business which is currently owned by Floyd & Ruth Asselstine and Gerald Asselstine i In the early eighties, Asselstine's started to sell Yamaha All Terrain Vehicles and for the nineties, Yamaha motorcycles were added. These lines are now a big part of Asselstine's business. At this time of year, the Sales Sports and Leisure Asselstine's 25th birthday Asselstine's is selling all three of their Yamaha product lines. Deposits are now being taken on the exciting line of 1996 Yamaha Snowmobiles. The ATV sales season is now in full swing with many excellent buys available including a great introductory price and package of the new 4x4 Wolverine. The new Wolverine is a 4WD ATV with attitude. They offer 'hydrolic disc brakes all around; loads of long travel suspension and the get up and go of the warrior engine all wrapped up in the lightest 4 stroke 4x4 available. The 1995 motorcycle sales are stronger this year than they have been for years. The ever popular Virago's and small play bikes are leading the way. Now is the time to get your bikes and ATV's ready for the riding season. Stop into Asselstine's and let their experienced staff take care of your bike. Also they have a gfeat line up of accessories and parts to help you enjoy your sport. Asselstine's is still at their original location on Durham Road 57, south of Blackstock. They'll be happy to serve you. to the occasion and played the best game of the yéar winning 7- 6 over an extremely good team. Goals and assists went to: ~ Stacey from Nicole; Nicole from Kelly; Rhea from Sheena and Jill; Rhea unassisted; Stacey «rom Nicole; Stacey from Sarah and Jill; and Stacey again from Rhea - this last goal went in - with only 12 seconds left is in the game! The Hamilton team had big girls, great skaters, great passing - everything going for them but our girls dug deep and won with their hearts. To say it was 'tense' on the bench would be an understatement but the pride of the staff to see these girls play with such determination brought tears! They skated, checked, passed, scored, and last but not least our #1 goalie Jill defies description and stunned our competitors to silence. With this win it was onward and upward to the Gold or Silver medal game later that afternoon. Our final and 5th game was Sunday afternoon vs St. Clements. The win against Hamilton seemed to have taken its-toll but the girls quickly pulled together with the same determination of earlier. Port scored first with a nice goal by Stacey assisted by Katherine and Lisa. Janna scored next assist to Stacy. Another goal by Port unassisted by Sarah and Port was ahead 3-0. St. Clements scored twice in the first period and Port again, Stacey from Katherine, and the first period ended 4-2 for Port. Second period action saw Port scoring twice more - Stacey from Janna and Shannon from Alaina BY and only 1 goal from St. Clements. A GOLD medal win for Port - Final score Port Perry 6, St. Clements 3. Next big win for the team was the League Championship game on Sunday March 26th vs Pickering. Pickering is a good team this year and Port and Pickering have enjoyed their games together. Pickering scored first in this game but the Shepstone girls had confidence galore and came back with 4 goals before the end of the first period. Rhea scored, assist to Sheena; followed by Katherine's goal, assist to Stacey; next was another goal by a great effort from Rhea; and . next a nice goal from the side of Shannon.' ) The Shepstone' girls held the Pickering team scoreless in the second period due to outstanding defence and the outstanding work of Jill. Port scored once more in the second (Stacey from Lisa). Final score Port 5, Pickering 1. Another great team effort resulting in another Gold. Next challenge for this hot team - now the League Champs - was the Regionals being held in Whitby, March 30, 31, April 1 and 2. First game for the girls was Kiday at 5:00 vs Ajax. First périod action saw Katherine feeding a nice pass to Stacey Shepstone Haulage ringette girls celebrate an excellent season with several tournament victories and gold medals at the recent Reglonal playoffs. See story for. a recap of some great moments on the ice for this hard working team. right at the blue line putting Port ahead 1-0. The rest of the first period was filled with near misses by Heather, Rhea Ashley and Sarah. Ports defence was flawless again - first period ended 1-0 Port. Second period Janna passes to Alaina B (pass went a bit too far but Alajna put on a great burst of speed to get to the ring before Ajax D's and put Port ahead 2- 0). Several near misses by some Port girls (Ash, Sheena), Nicole scored to put Port ahead 3-0 and final score. Another solid team effort, and the girls were ready for 3 games on Saturday - a day when stamina would come into effect. It should be mentioned here that Coach Barry Virtue and Assistant Coach Steve Cunningham had been giving the team some additional incentive to"win with a promise © of letting the girls buzz all their hair off at the end of the season! First game on the Saturday was at 11:00 vs Whitby. An exciting 8-7 win for Port. Goals and assists went to Rhea from Sheena; Stacey from Alaina D.; Stacey again; Katherine from Ashley; Alaina B.; Rhea to Sheena (who was in the clear!); Heather from Sheena; and Katherine's pass to Stacy - Final score Port 8, Whitby 7. Next game was at 4:15 vs Pickering. Port girls played another exciting game vs the good Pickering team - winning 4-3. Port goals and assists were; Katherine from Stacey; Nicole from Lisa and Alaina D.; Stacey from Rhea and Katherine; and Nicole from Ashley and Stacey. Third game Saturday was vs Oshawa where Port girls sailed to a fairly easy 10-0 win. Goals and assists went to: Shannon from Rhea; Shannon unassisted; Rhea from Shannon; Nicole from Ashley; Nicole unass 3 Alaina B. from Stacey and Katherine; Stacey from Wlaina B. and Katherine; Sheena from Stacey; Jenna from Sheena and Nicole; and Kelly unassisted. So with these wins behind them it was a good night sleep and get ready for the Regional Championship game which would be vs Pickering, Sunday 11:45 in Whitby. The gizls arrived ready and 'pumped' and wanting nothing less than the gold again. Pickering didn't seem to play quite up to their potential and Port could taste the GOLD! Cheers from the parents "Hair Cut Time!" also was a factor in the girls going that extra mile. First period action saw goals from Stacey assist to Alaina B., Sarah unassisted; Rhea from Sheena; and Stacey from Nicole First period ended 4-1 Port. Second period Port held Pickering scoreless on no' less than superb defence work. Port scored twice more: Nicole unassisted; and Stacey from Ashley. Final score Port 6 Pickering 1 Port Perry Shepstone Haulage Petites were the Regional Champs! What a year - A total of 5 GOLD MEDAL WINS for a team with great heart.
