Spring can now arrive gince the SHL has finished the 94/95 season, the Awards have been distributed and the baseball equipment has been dragged out ready for the next few months of male bonding. As in previous years, the SHL championship games brought out a huge crowd 'to watch the 5 exciting final matches. / SHL 'A' Champions - Fitzgerald Clippers. This was the final match of the day as the Fitzgerald Clippers played the Monsma Chargers for 'top honours this year. The game missed injured Clipper, John Delorme and hobbling Charger, Rick Olaisen due to injuries. In true 'A' Division form the action went end-to-end with excellent hockey played by both teams. Larry Pilkey put the Clippers ahead late in the second period on a goal from Jody Peters and netminder Bill Eade. is marker stood right to the % end with the Chargers doing everything in an attempt to tie up the game to force overtime. With a mere 29 seconds left on the clock, steady defenseman "Rot" Gwen launched an empty netter to give the Clippers a well deserved 2-0 victory and yet another 'A' Championship for sponsor Carl Fitzgerald. Bill Eade Made some fantastic saves enroute to the Clipper shutout. Game stars: D. Harrison MVP Goaltender Award - Bill Eade; R. The crowd was kept on the edge of their seats during this 'final as the Harrison Blazers squared off against the J&D Hawks. With 2 former Junior C goaltenders guarding the cages, you knew that the game would be a dandy. The lone goal of the torrid opening period went to the Blazers on gfine play for scoring ch John Harman from Darcy Milligan and goaltender Ken Harman. The second frame went scoreless with great plays at both ends of the rink. Early in the third the Hawks got the equalizer as Joe Curran netted one from Rick Hope and Peter Lane. Then it was the Blazers who pulled ahead on a tally by David Roth from Richard Sakanashi and Jim Beatty, and then a second one on an unassisted John Harman effort. The Hawks were not done however, and they stormed back with 1:37 left on the clock to narrow the margin on a goal by Ritchie LeFort from Karl Durward. The Hawks pulled out all 'the stops in the final minute but just couldn't score and the Blazers prevailed 3-2 for the Championship Honours. This was an-excellent game for both teams. Game stars: D. Championship games in the SHL just couldn't be any better as the fans got yet another treat to great hockey in this final. matchup 'between 'the Pineridge Phantoms and the Pizza Delight Devils. Once again it was typical playoff hockey as these two teams hit the drena spotlight. Forget about the last time these squads faced each other in the playoff round. For this game all players put on their game faces for great entertainment. Midway through the first period the Phantoms hit the scoreboard on a goal by Wayne Hancock from Clarence Stephenson and Lee Steeves. The Devils pressed and finally knotted the score at one apiece early in. the second on a tally by Ken Smart Jr. from Bill Foote and Tim Ashbridge.. * Just when it looked like this one was surely headed for overtime, Brian Samis potted a rebound assisted «by Bill VanCamp and Steve Fox to put the Phantoms up ane. For the last 1:47 the Devils stormed the Phantom Zone by goaltender Shawn Parker stood tall and the Phantoms went on to take the 2-1 victory and 'C' Division honours. Game stars: B. With sponsor Ron Compton's Trophy on the line, the Compton Comets had a little extra incentive as they took to the ice to play the Van World Sharks in this Championship Game. The Sharks had closed out the 'Round Robin format in fine form last week and the Comets knew they would have to grab a quick lead to win this one. As per the game plan, the Comets launched from the opening draw to build a 3 goal lead before the Sharks lone reply in the frat period. With one in the second and a couple in the final frame, they were able to hold off the Shark attempt at a comeback and cruised to a;6-4 victory to take the 'D' Division honours. This game as you can see featured great scoring as well as end to end action mixed in with a parade to the penalty box, to give the fans a different look to . championship hockey compared to the. tight checking in the other games. Dave Dickson led the Comets with 2 goals and 3 assists. Team mate Willy Edwards had a great game as well with a hat trick and 1 assist. Mike McQuade added the other goal while Roger Moase, Terry Flieler, Paul Goreski, Brian Bums and Tom Barnes ' made the scoresheet with single assists. For the Sharks it was Phil Cochrane with 4 assists, Steve Conners with 2 goals and 2 assists and Wayne Fox with 2 goals and 1 assist, providing the scoring. Game stars: W. "Le Bowl" winners for the 94/95 season Crandell Gamblers. As in any league, there remain's two teams to play for the tail-ender award. All championship 'games have teams playing their best for the victory, but this contest holds special interest, since no team wishes to lose, and thus win the special 'super bowl'. Enter the Taylor Aces and the Crandell Gamblers to the arena to go head-to-head in this year's 'fan fayourite'. Right from the start it was evident that team ~ sponsor, Wayne Taylor, and team rep, Ken Little, did not want any part of new lawn ts for the , and or Harrison Blazers were awarded the Re/Max Trophy and golf shirts for their first place h in league play. the Aces exploded to a 4 goal lead. Rick Campbell netted a pair while Mark Pehlemann had a goal and an 'assist. Legend' Sheehey added the other as Al Bonner, Wayne Taylor, and Dave Brownson had single assists for the Ace scoring thrust. The Gamblers did manage a single replying the final frame as Mark Burger scored from ken Jeffrey but that was all as the Aces dodged the bullet and the Gamblers went 'flush' for 94/95. With the games out of the way, it was time to attend the social windup at the Scout Hall for bragging rights and the final hardware for the season.
