Daniels Studies conducted by the Angus Reid Group (July and August, 1994), reveal that seventy-three percent of Canadians consider themselves Christians. That figure is even higher for the area served by this newspaper. According to 1991 census figures, eighty-three percent of the more than thirty thousand people living within a 15km radius of Island Road and Highway 7A claim 'to be Protestant or Catholic, denominations defined as Christian in our culture. Historically both Catholics and Protestants recognize the Bible as the Word of God, accepting it as God's revelation of his will for humankind. Admittedly, these Scriptures have fallen on hard times in many churches, but they still hold a central place in the weekly worship and liturgy of our churches. Since eighty- three out of every one hundred people living in our area identify with denominations professing allegiance to the Bible, it seemy/ right that the moral principles Scripture be introduced to the public forum. Not everyone agrees with giving the Bible a role in community discussions, arguing that a multicultural, pluralistic society cannot accommodate this intrusion of religion. How often do we hear "You can't legislate morality." The truth is, we are alyfys legislating morality, since every law enacted, every act committed, and every thought held has a profoundly moral implication. Moral 'neutrality is an impossibility. The only question is, which moral values will we espouse as a society? It is the goal of this column to introduce biblical values to the public discussion. The Scriptures contain © many important principles which can provide direction for the uncertain times in which we live. Whether or not these principles are accepted, I believe it is right to throw them into the arena of public ideas. Ancient Israel understood that public morals had a critical. impact upon the well-being of their nation. The Hebre wily Scriptures (what we call the Old Testament) observed: "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people" (Proverbs 14:34 - NIV). "By justice a king gives a country stability, but one who is greedy for bribes tears it down" (Proverbs 29:4 - NIV). The prosperity and power of a nation depends upon its righteousness. Where there is widespread injustice, . greed, hatred, disregard for the environment (and this list could go gp), there is disorder and confusion: it is a place of disgrace. In the public arena, where values and philosophies compete for the hearts and minds of women and men, the steady, consistent voice of the Bible has a legitimate role.
