It is hard to explain the relief we felt. I was not a hero, just another Canadian who felt Canada was worth fighting for, and 50 years is a long time. The things I remember most vividly about the war are those I never talk about. I have tried to put them out of my mind, but they. are still there to this day. We never received any kind of therapy, and until about ten years ago I never spoke about the horrors of war. A young girl doing an interview with a veteran asked me. I talked about things and it helped me. 1 had two brothers and a sister who served in the army. I joined the army and left my wife Vera with two sons, ages four and two. Another son was born two weeks after I landed in England. I landed in France a few days after D Day with the 2nd Armored Brigade. Although the war in Europe officially ended May 9, 1945, I did not arrive home until January '16, 1946. After 14 months of war in Europe, the five months wait for transport home to Canada seemed to last forever. In October, «it was announced that the Queen Elizabeth would 'start carrying Canadign troops home. I came to New York on board this ship in January. Seeing the Statue of Liberty was such a beautiful sight. Summer.is here so J . . let's enjoy it ...
