Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, May 9, 1995 -- 15 = Local rider wins Ontario Dressage title by Heather McCrae When Michele Van Heiningeng, learned recently she'd won the 1994 All-Ontario "Trillium" Reserve Dressage Championship and was also the year's "Medium Two" Champion for the Central East Region, she was pleased with her efforts. But, striving for better things, she's already got her sights on winning the Provincial Championship this year. Michele started to ride when she was 12 years old, but began taking dressage lessons in her early twenties. "I always liked to jump but never had coches that wanted to jump" she explained to the Citizen in a recent interview at her Scugog Island stable. Michele's team mate in the dressage ring has been "Rambo", a Trakehner thoroughbred -x bay gelding. Standing at 16 hands, he was born at Michele's stable ten years ago. "He's a real compact package, with a gentle disposition gost of the time" she grinned. An easy horse to break, Michele has been the one to teach him the graceful art of dressage. At the shows her equine friend is known as "Travieso". "I went for & Spanish name because all Engagement Announcement Ken and Faye Douglas of Elmira are honoured to announce the engagement of their daughter usa DIRK MOLENAAR son of Teunis and Ali Molenaar of Sunderland. The marriage will take place on Satlirday, October 7th, 1995 at St. James Lytheran Church Elmira. years ahead to VALERIE & BRIAN NEUDORF who were married on April 15th, 1995 * in Edmonton. With love from - Mom and Dad the nice sounding German names were already taken" # Michele explained. But around the stable he's my "Rambo". Michele's been seriously competing on the Trillium Circuit for the last 4 gears. For the last two, she's been coached by Martha MacTavish of Fenelon Falls, a Grand Prix (Olympic) level dressage nde? "Since I've been under her coaching I've been winning" she told the Citizen. : Riding at the Medium 1C and 2C Levels, she plans to continue competing 'on the Trillium Circuit this year but also has ambitions to compete af the recognized level too. At the later level she'll be competing against the best equestrians in the country, but it's something she's looking forward to. . Much discipline is needed from both horse and rider in dressage. But, self-control is something Michele is accustomed to. The thirty-one year old also Mas her 3rd Degree Black Belt in karate and is an instructor with the Port Perry Wado-Kai at the Latcham Centre. "I like a challenge, there's something exhilarating about competing" she said. While her husband, Randy, doesn't ride, he backs his wife's sport 100%. Trailering Michele and "Rambo" to all the shows, mostly in the Toronto area, she laughs and says "he's my groom, and my backbone, but not a rider!" At her farm, Cedar Valley Stables, Michele is currently teaching dressage and hunter classes to about 30 riders, ranging in age from four to fifty one years of age and also teaches at Hoskin Stables in Blackstock. "You never stop learning in dressage" she says, "there's always something to learn". Whether it's "Rambo" or one of the school horses in her fifteen stall barn, she's in the saddle almost every dey. So; what wordg of wisdom does Michele pass on to other riders? . "Patience is the key" she said. "Some things can take a month to"achieve - and learn to relax in the saddle - you've got to be relaxed up there" she smiled. - Losing the championship by a fraction of a point, Michele has her sights on winning the Provincial championship this year.
