Quilts from across the province will be' on display at the Ontario Agricultural Museum from the middle of June until the end of August. The quilt show is a part of the celebrations leading up to the 100th Anniversary in 1997 of Women's Institute in Ontario. Twenty-five members make up the Bethesda Reach Women's Institute and 'over half of these ladies played a part in making their masterpiece. Each square lends a story about the history of Women's Institutes. In the centre of the quilt is a tree, symbolic of the WI branches and their environmental concerns. Being the focal point, the tree is surrounded by sampler blocks, some old and others more contemp- quilt in Prelude Show The Bethesda Reach Women's Institute Is entering a quilt In the Centennial Prelude Quilit Show In Milton next month. The Show Is a prelude to the Centennial celebrations taking place In 1997. In photo are charter members Corinne Croxall (front), from left Jean Smith, Fern Burnett, Dorothy Doble, Seg story. orary. Adorned with trilliums and maple leaves, the barn at sunrise and the schoolhouse in the opposite corner are indicative of the rural roots of Women's Institute. Other squares in the quilt, such as the Grandmother's Flower Garden, Log Cabin, Bear's Paw and Grandmother's Fan are all reminders of the traditional patterns handed down from mother to daughter. "I didn't have a living room for six weeks" Corinne Croxall told the Citizen, as-her country home was used for the duration of the project. . . "We've shared a lot of laughs and drank several cups of tea and coffee over the past two months" she smiled fondly, adding "it was a labour of love for all of us". The quilt will be delivered fo the Ontario Agricultural Museum in Milton on May 19 in plenty of time for the competition on June 14 and will remain there until the end of August. PORT PERRY, Ontario LIL 1A6 * NO PHONE ENQUIRIES PLEASE "Abalanced budget is our best hope for "the future," said Mary Novak, Liberal candidate for Durham East. . "This is a crucial period for us, both here in Durham East and dcross Ontario. It's a period of change, and our plan will manage that thasge; she explained. "We can't keep spending like' we have been, running up hiige deficits that have become a burden to us all. That's why our plan will cut government! spending by more than $4 billion dollars, start easing the tax burden by 5 percent and balance the budget within four years. And we'll bring in balanced budget legislation to make sure it gets done." "As a financial planner myself, I'm convinced our plan is the way to ensure a prosperous future," said Novak. Other financial experts agree. Henry ~ Pankrantz, deputy Chairman of Ernst & Young says "the Liberal plan to balance the budget in four years is achievable and should create confidence in the investment community." "That confidence has been lost," said Novak. "Bob Rae's Socialist government has chased business away. Half a ' explained, in million people are out of work and over a million are on welfare. Our plan will increase jobs and actively promote the creation of new business. Government should help business, not stifle it. That's one of the reasons our plan will cut the cost of dealing with government by at least 50 per cent." "We also can't have massive tax cuts and maintain the quality of health care and education that have made Ontario the best place in the world to live," she response to the Conservative's plan to cut taxes by 30 per cent. "These cuts will end up costing us more, not less. It simply won't work." Another crucial issue facing Durham East is crime, about which the Liberal team'has a clear plan. "We have to tackle crime head on," asserted Novak, who said the Rae government simply hasn't done that, and that crime is no longer just a big-city problem. "Our plan is quite specific. We're going to crack down hard on gun-related crime, toughen parole provisions and pass legislation to keep sexual predators off the streets."
