Also Trevor Till has been bothered by a bad back this spring and will not be available for the start of the season. The Gambler pitching will be handled by veterans Mark Goreski and Jim Chilvers with the notable addition of Byron Baranieski from the Stouffville Jrs. Along with Baranieski came his battery mate Chris Burkholder who will share the catching duties with Paul Goreski and Ray Kurhan from the Oghawa Squirrels who will be patrolling the Greenbank outfield. : " In-fielders returning include Greg Newell, Steve Durham, Brian Till, Don Beaton and Pete Oosterholt, while the speedy Dan Balachorek will be roaming in right field. Another major change for the Gamblers will be new Head Coach Wayne Venning who takes over behind the bench from Ken Goreski, who after 14 years as a Gambler player and" coach has decided to retire. Don Phinney will again be a Gambler coach. Wayne Venning who has coached Port Perry Minor teams to a number of OASA titles, returns to Greenbank Park where he started his fastball career as the Gamblers first baseman in 1957. Greenbank is still on the lookout for one or two quality players to round out their 1995 playing roster. The Oshawa City & District League has expanded to 13 teams this year with the addition of Richmond Hill, Bradford, Brampton, Aurora and Markham and should be one of the top leagues in the province. Notice Popular sports columnist Jim Hughson has decided to take the summer off. He assures us that his column 'In A Rink Somewhere' will return for the start of the hockey season this fall. You can bet there will be columns about baseball leading up + to the fall classic. would like to thank.the following sponsors for their generous support of our 1994- 95 Season ... Once again the annual Rotary Artfest was another success. Held at the Scugog Arena over the weekend the show f@atured the talents of many artists throughout the province: Paul Livingston of Burketon displays his woodburning * crafts, jewellery and sculptures. Lawn bowling open house The Port Perry Lawn Bowling Club is celebrating its 85th year. The Club started in 1910 on Queen Street, across from where the IGA store is located. In 1986 it moved to its new, location, on Old Simcoe Road, across from the Police Station. Scoring in Lawn Bowls is similar to Curling except that, instead of throwing to a spot on the ice, one rolls a "bowl" trying to be closest to a little white ball (the Jack). The Jack however may be bounced around within the confines of the 'rink'. Yes, the 12 to 14 foot wide patch of grass, 120 feet long is called a rink. While the stone, in Curling, is thrown with a twist, to make it curl, the Bowl is thrown straight but curls as it slows because of its shape. The sport can be as social or as competitive as you want to make it.. Who can tell, some year you may be a nationa] or even an® international competitor. There are 12,000 bowlers in 170 clubs in Ontario and the number grows each year. Perhaps that's because it is also one of the most economical sports. Anyone wanting to try the game is welcome to any of the Open House Nights, May 16, 17, 18, 283, 24 or 25 at 7 pm or any Thursday evening after that. There is no charge but you do need 'to wear soft flat soled shoes (mo heels). Our season runs to mid Sept. For information call Joyce Stephenson 985-9901 or Cam Crawford 985-0158.
