ZL Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, May 16, 1995 -- 13 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Money could be much better spent To The Editor: Allan Rock keeps telling us that a woman is killed by a firearm every 5 days; a total of 69 deaths each year, and unfortunately, alcohol and drug abuse figures in a majority of these instances. This is true, but lets put this fact in perspective. . Breast cancer kills 1 woman every 2 hours totaling 4,830 deaths per year. The Federal Government has pledged to Preventing cancer To The Editor: I wonder how many readers have heard of the recent release of the Report of the Ontario Task Force on the Primary Prevention of Cancer? 2 The report draws some pretty hardhitting connections between environmental pollutants and a variety of illnesses, including cancer. For example, ground level ozone (ie. smog from car exhaust) contributes to "decreased lung function and other respiratory problems in humans". The report comments that "The continued use of organochlorines as pesticides and in-industrial feedstocks is of great concern to the Task .© Force" and recommends that "Government should establish timetables to sunset the use of chlorine- containing compounds as industrial feedstocks and examine" the means of reducing J er lsd el UR COLOSTOMY, ILEOSTOMY, UROSTOMY APPLIANCES 31 Years Experience Now Located in Scugog 15501 East 1/4 Line, Nestleton (905) 986-1164 or Toll Free 1-800-371-0163 Pickup or 1-2 Day Delivery Service or eliminating other uses of chlorine, bearing in mind the priority to ban substances established as carcinogens". Another recommendation supports "the development and application of alternative, non- chemical, pest control measures", Apparently one in three of us can now expect to contract cancer (one in two if skin cancers are taken into account). Maybe more of us need to focus efforts on preventing cancer? If you'd like a copy of the Task Force Report on the Primary Prevefition of Cancer, call the Ontario Ministry of Health, Communications Branch, at (416)327-4383. After reading it, some folks may want to consider joining a local environmental group which is already working * on these issues. Janet Banting, Greenbank. spend $5 million a year on breast cancer research ($20 million over five years); the registering of legally-owned firearms is going to cost, not the original $85 million Mr. Rock was saying, but a revised Rock figure of $119 million. And this figure is questionable when experts, who don't have to lie to prove a point, have estimated the cost of gun registration to be from $500 million to $1 billion over 5 years. There are approximately 1,400 firearms deaths per year total (including suicides) and almost none would be affected by registration. Any death by whatever cause i regrettable and a sorrow, but we must put our limited and diminishing resources where they will help the greatest proportion of society; not into the creation of a bureaucratic program of questionable merit - the Auditor General wants government to access what it already has before it introduces anymore costly gun control measures. Even Mr. Rock can give no guarantees that what he is proposing will stop the loss of life through the use of firearms: "I think it will help. (But) I don't want to overstate it.
