Ward 2 by-election can At 24 years of age, Jeff Brown is one of the youngest persons to ever seek election to Scugog Township council. But he doesn't think his age is any kind of'a hinderance in the May 23 Ward 2 by-election. In fact, he describes himself in his campaign brochure as a "fresh mew face on council." Brown has lived in Scugog for the last 23 years, is a graduate * of Port Perry High School (where he served as student council treasurer in 1990) and from George Brown College in Toronto with a diploma in food and beverage management. He has been actively involved in community organizations and says running for Township council is an extension of his work in the community. He was a member of the Canada 125 Committee in Scugog and the executive of the Port Perry Junior C MoJack hockey team. He was recently appointed secretary for the club. Brown has some definite ideas he would like to pursue if elected in Ward 2 on May 23. --r Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, May 16, 1995 -- 15 --= "The Township's No. 1 priority should be the completion of the Scugog Centre in its entirety, as soon as possible," he said. Paying for this project, which would include a second ice pad and swimming, pool should come through "aggressive fund raising." He points to the success of the drive to raise funds for the new wing at the Memorial Hospital ($3.6 million) as an example of the kind of funds that could be raised by the community to pay for the new Ward 2 candidate Ruth Mark Ruth Mark says she will be a full time councillor is she wins the by-election May 23 for the vacant Ward 2 seat. on Scugog Township council. Mark has lived in the community for over 50 years and pledges to be accessible to the voters in the ward, will listen to all concerns and put Ruth Mark those concerns ahead of any others. : Her views on whether the council should be moving ahead with the Scugog Centre project (second ice pad/swimming pool) are that "yes, these would be great, but where arewe going to get the money." Mark said she will work to "promote identification of community needs and responsible cost effective fund- raising and expenditure programs in accord with the community's financial ability." She believes the Township must continue to encourage tourism and expansion of tourist facilities, but also that tourists should contribute. She would like to see a user fee for. family picnics in the lakefront parks in Port Perry so that local tax-payers are not hit with the full cost of maintaining these parklands. : Stating that the Townshi needs new residential development, she believes the il should not rily insist that the Canterbury Commons proposal must include a nine hole golf course as originally planned. But if there is not a golf course in the development, the council must. insist on guaranteed and continued maintenance of the open space. Mark operated her own business in Port Perry for 20 years (1960-1980) and now describes herself as "too busy and too active to be retired." She said she would like to see more concern for environmental issues and will encourage. more public education and dialogue. She is committed to creating an environment in the Township where everyone has the right to equal opportunities. Mark believes private enterprise should be encouraged to develop a "quality" hotel/motel. development in - Scugog as this would help attract more tourism in the area. $1000000.00 & $1000000.00 & we 21000000.00 Community didate Jeff Brown facilities at Scugog Centre. He would like to see more of a balance between "active" recreation facilities and what he termed the "excellent" passive recreation amenities here. Brown also wants to improve public transit connections between Port Perry, Oshawa and Toronto, and feels the Township badly needs a hotel/resort to further develop the tourist industry. > The Conway property on the lakeshore in Port Perry would be the ideal location for such a hotel/resort development, he believes. He said he feels the present council is right in demanding that the Canterbury Commons developers include a nine hole golf course in the project as originally planned. i Jeff Brown for the Township of Scugog (P.ART.S.) proudly presents Per ing Arts R =r V h Friday, May 261 1995 Saturday, May 278 199 Town Hall 1873 PortPerry, Ontaio [ Curtain: 8:00 p.m. SHARP An evening of music, dance and comedy.
