Chic Carnegie will take over the reins from Brad Menzies who is stepping down after two years as the MoJack head coach. Carnegie worked the last two seasons with the MoJacks as assistant and defensive coach. Menzies = informed the organization several weeks ago that he would be stepping down and general manager Murray Parliament made it "official" this past Saturday evening as players, friends, parents, coaches and executive got together at the Port Perry. Legion for the annual awards banquet. Menzies said his decision to give up the coaching duties was based on a couple of factors: commitments to the family Jeep dealership in Ajax where he works, and the'desire to have more time for his own pursuits in recreational hockey. "At 'this point in my life, I felt I needed more time for other things," he told the Citizen, adding that his decision does not mean he is closing the door on coaching at some point in the fut Menzi tod has been with the Junior C MoJacks both as a star player and captain and head coach. In taking over the head coaching duties, Chic Carnegie told the Citizen he is pleased that a strong nucleus from last year's squad is eligible to come out for training camp this fall. He said he wasn't sure if he was going to continue in coaching, but when the head coach's job came up he wanted it. "My family was very supportive," he told the Citizen. He said a couple of priorities will be to build a tough fore- checking squad, guys who are able to go into the corners and come up with the puck. "I'll be looking for some big, strong power forwards who can put the pressure on," he said, adding that strong specialty teams are a major key to success in the Junior C League. MoJacks finished the past season in sec place, then defeated Golo Ice in an exciting playoff before bowing out to Bowmanville Eagles who went all the way to the Ontario Junior C final series. General manager Murray Parliament said at the Saturday night awards banquet that success is not measured strictly by winning championships. He credited the team for a strong work ethic, learning how to accept defeat and how to bounce back from defeat. Parliament thanked the players, coaches, managers and executive for their dedication to the organization. He also thanked , Mother Jackson Open Kitchens and.the Jackson family for 24 years of straight sponsorship of the heckey club. It will be a different Junior C League this fall as the Bowmanville Eagles will be playing at the Tier Two level. That will leave the Junior C loop with the following teams: Port Perry, Uxbridge, Little Britain, Lakefield, Bobcaygeon and Georgina. N The Eagles have purchased the Barrie Colts Junior B franchise and will move it to Bowmanville for this coming season. New head coach Chic Carnegie said he expects the Junior C Loop to be very competitive. "The level of hockey is very strong. With the exception of Bobcaygeon, all teams have been very competitive. We had to show up ready to play every game," he said. Peterborough nips Squirts 3-1 On May 11th, Scugog's Fastball Squirt Rep team hosted Peterborough in their opening York-Durham League game. Peterborough went up 2-0 in the first as our squad was a little nervous. We replied in the bottom of the first to mek# it 2- L In the fourth, the Peterborough team got an unearned run and this would ensure their 3-1 victory. The Legion squad left the bases loaded in the second and stranded 2 more runners at third as our team kept fighting back. Our offence was led by Jeff Kane (who scored our lone run) with a single and two walks. Our other hits were by Mike "Koury and Tim Jones. Adam Lamb earned 2 walks and had a stolen base. Cory McQuade and Devon Howsam also earned free passes to first. David Akermanis and Matt Fraser both showed heads-up defensive coverage in their' first rep league game start. Luke Pilkey looked confident at their base and veteran Mike Wiseman was solid at first. Big ~ Matt Skerratt made a nifty throw to third base to shock a runner there when Peterborough were attempting a double steal. Tim Jones was on the rubber for the Legion and he scattered just 3 hits, 4 walks, while striking out 11 batters. Not a bad beginning for the _ squad which hasn't really had time for work on batting and team tactics in practice yet. Trevor Doan and Alex Mitchell have agreed to be subs for the team this year thus far. The team needs another pitcher or _ two for the bullpen so let us know if your were born in 1983 84 and would like to try out. Next home game will be Thursday, May 18th at 6:30 at the South Diamond on Water ~ St. against Newmarket.
