< gog Citizen -- Wednestlay, May 24, 19 1995 -- 17 Musical tribute to Joyce On Thursday May 25, recently retired, long time school board trustee for' Scugog, Joyce Kelly, will be honoured for her service to education in Scugog at the joint Cartwright Central, Cartwright High School Music Night. "No one had the courage to start wearing pant suits, so one day we all had it planned we'd wear them the next day", she said. "Harry was obliging -- he didn't say anything and we've been wearing pants ever since" she said, amidst the laughter. Mrs. Marg Hildenbrand, current principal at the school, said she's always impressed with Eleanor's "calming and reasoning ways to resolve problems and conflicts". "If you had a problem, you'd always walk away with a smile after talking to Eleanor" she said. Eileen Slute, Jean Holtby, Lois Cochrane and May Stark, all retired teachers of the school and known affectionately as "the Ol' Guards" poured tea at the retirement party. Cartwright Central Public School and will feature the bands and choirs from both schools, including the CHS Senior Concert Band which was recently awarded a silver medal at the Montreal International Music Festival. The evening will conclude with "These ladies all had remarkable teaching skills and instilled wonderful guidelines in their students" Eleanor said. "I'm proud to join you as one of the "Ol" Guards", she said, dabbing at her eyes. Recalling how the school lost many of its staff when S.A. Cawker PS opened its doors in 1989, she said "I lost many good golfing partners with that move". Over the years Eleanor performed duties as the school nurse, too. Stating she can easily spot pink eye now and other common ailments, she tended to her last nosebleed Thursday afternoon. As for the parents of SAC, she had nothing but words of praise. "They contribute themselves to the school and their children are so proud their parents are involved" she said. a tribute to Joyce and a massed band number performed by all the music students at CHS. Admission is free, with contributions being accepted for the music programmes at CHS and CCPS. Plan to attend this event honouring a true friend of education in Scugog. Eleanor Accompanying Eleanor at her retirement party were her husband, Bill, their daughter, Martha, and six month old granddaughter, Dana. A devoted horticulturalist, Eleanor told the Citizen she chose to retire before the end of the year so she could get at her gardening before the weather became too hot. She was presented with several gifts on behalf of the staff, Durham Board and SAC. Bill retired several years ago and both are looking forward to spending time with their new granddaughter and visiting their son in the Maritimes. "I've made many good friends, not just teachers, but students too" she said. "I've had a lot of fun and laughs over the years". "I'm proud to have been a small part of a great school". Mr. and Mrs. Cecll Gibson of Blackstock celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary May 19. Married In Blackstock, they are life long residents. On May 20 family and friends held open house In thelr honour at the Blackstock United Church.
