Scugog Citizen -- Wednesday, May 24, 1995 -- 5 - Nonquon tradition continues again June 3 For the past 27 years somevhing special has taken place in Scugog on the first Saturday in June. It's called Canoe the Nonquon, and over the years thousands of hardy canoeists (and some not so hardy) have paddled the route along the Nonquon River to Lake Scugog and then to the finish line at the Port Perry waterfront. It can be a competitive race against the clock, or an easy going paddle through some of the most scenic and picturesque countryside in southern Ontario. No wonder Canoe the Nonquon is the largest and oldest race of its kind in Ontario, and has become a favoured "institution" in the community. This year, the Nonquon will be June 3 (first Saturday in June) and registration forms are now available at many local businesses including Brocks store on Queen Street and the Scugog Citizen at 36 Water Street in Port Perry. Or you can call the race secretary at 985-7014 for full details. The secretary will even help arrange a partner so you don't have to paddle alone.
