Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, May 30, 1995 -- 27 A Don't forget to clean your BBQ often Are you tired of those black wings, dried dogs'or soggy burgers? We've all had this happen to us, and are usually consoled that it was of course due to being caught up in the moment. What we generally find is a burner that's not all there, or a grease build up se high that it's a wonder the BBQ ignites at all. A quick 10 minutes and most of these problems could be removed and a safe, burn free cooking experience could happen. The main things to remember is a yearly check of hoses, fittings and tank. 'Clean thoroughly and replace any rusted parts. Never leave the barbeque unattended, or near vinyl siding (my own personal lesson) and never, never stick your head in to test the piezo igniter. Both could finish your summer. There are barbeques that cost anywhere from $100.00 to $2,500.00, and from my experience I've found quite a Watch for early trouble signs on your shingles Watching for signs of weathering on your shingles can save you money, states Mike owan of Hometown Roofing. If you have a one layer shingle roof and you catch trouble signs in their early stages, it could make the difference of having the option to shingle over your existing roof versus paying to have your shingles removed and disposed. And you can avoid internal repair costs by fixing your roof before it begins to leak. Mike suggests, if your shingle roof is 10 years old or older you should have your roof inspected . for the following trouble signs. 1) When an asphalt shingle begins to dry, the shingle tabs slowly curl under. This "clawing" effect causes a bulge in your shingles which allows leakage or wind damage to your roof area. 2) "Buckling" is created when the roof deck moves causing a distortion along the horizontal line of the shingles. These overlying shingle tabs are raised over the buckles and can blow off in high winds. 3) Look closely for "cracking" in the shingle surface. These fine fissures eventually become crevices that will allow water seepage and cause damage inside your home. 4) If your shingle tabs show signs of "curling" upward, your Citizen Display Ads Top value! |Top value! call Chris Hudson 985-6397 The Scugog Citizen, All You Really Need ina Newspaper! roof may be vulnerable to blow- off, seepage and water damage. 5) Old caulking around the chimney flashing and vent stack areas are suspect to leakage. If you notice any of these conditions happening to the shingles on your roof, Mike advises that you contact a roofing specialist to investigate the condition of your roof. A phrase too often heard is "A barbeque is a barbeque," but generally it's from 'the people that come to buy their burner every year or 80. With the popularity of natural gas and propane fireplaces, more and more people are converting their barbeques to the permanent system. All of this is fine, but make sure there's a full shut 'off 'valve at the unit. Unfortunately a well known happening these days is that leaving the barbeque going for an extra 5 minutes to burn the grease off the grill trick is sometimes forgotten, and not discovered until 2 weeks later. A very costly mistake when the fuel never runs out. Have a happy summer, and enjoy the barbeque experience! It can be a lot of. flavourful fun for the whole family.
