By the Book ELIMINATING PORNOGRAPHY AS ENTERTAINMENT by David S. Daniels Justice Patrick Lesage wisely ruled that the news media and the public not be allowed to view the videotapes of graphic sexual and physical violence which have been presented as evidence in the Paul Bernardo trial. Kirk Makin (Globe & Mail, May 31, 1995) quotes Justice Lesage; "The public pictorial display of these videos has virtually no redeeming societal allowing the general public to view them will "seriously affect" many of them along with the family and friends. I can only imagine the pain for family and friends, and the revulsion of others who have to view these tapes, knowing that they are witnessing incredible cruelty inflicted on young lives. These are not staged film productions, but the real-life torture and agony of teenagers who once lived and laughed among us. But does it occur to us that it is value...Public display of this evidence will seriously affect the families, friends and, I suspect, a large number of citizens." Two comments from Justice Lesage's quote strike me as significant. He says these tapes have "virtually no redeeming societal value," and that ible to go to an adult video store and rent or purchase a professionally produced video depicting the very same kinds of things, take it home and watch it for entertainment? If there is "virtually no redeeming societal value" in the tapes at the Paul Bernardo trial, how does a similar video, simply because it Womens health study Women, 35 years of age and older, can participate in a study of women's health issues. Nurses in. the Durham Region Health Department are conducting the study to assist them in planning programs for adult women. The study will require that participants receive some health information by mail. A brief telephone survey regarding this information will be conducted prior to receiving the information and again in the fall. Women interested in joining the study should call Linda or Tracy at the Health Department (905)723-8521. The deadline 'for participation is June 30, 1995. was staged and produced with actors and directors, become a legitimate form of entertainment? I don't believe that it is, and I believe everyone, especially those who profess to be Christians, ought to speak out against the availability of hard- core pornography. If viewing the Bernardo tapes will "seriously affect" those who view them, then a professionally produced video will also inflict serious harm. The Apostle Paul encouraged Christians in the first century city of Ephesus to avoid even talking about the activities of sexual perversion. In an extended discussion about living pure lives, Paul writes: "Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret" (Ephesian 5:11-12-NIV). Paul understood that one is affected by the things he or she views, reads, and discusses. While we live in a less than perfect society, and while we cannot expect, to eliminate all that is wrong, we ought to take definite steps to inhibit and limit as much evil as possible. Surely that includes working hard to eliminate pornography as an acceptable form of entertainment. WE'VE DISCOVERED THE DIFFERENCE ...
