Fh Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, June 6, 1995 -- 11 4 healthstyles deb mcdonald The best way to burn body fat is through steady, aerobic exercise. Whatever your fitness level, the first few minutes of any aerobic workout can be unsettling. The more fit you are, the less time is required to find a comfortable level of exercising, which may take up to ten minutes for the average person #0 one minute for the athlete. To gain a better understanding ofg the mechanism of action in body fat metabolism, this issue should be addressed first. storage takes place in a layer just underneath the skin which is called the adipocite. In exercise, when you move your muscles, this fat layer is activated and some of it gets 'dumped' into your blood The blood then takes this fat to the' muscle being exercised. Within the muscle, the fat then further gets broken downsinto émaller components via the process - known as aerobic metabolism, where energy is provided for the muscles to contract. But this process takes time. So doing short spurts of exercise or activity or moving furniture around will not provide instant results. On the other hand, if you keep moving during exercise, this will be the best way to activate those fat cells. It is ideal to find a comfortable workout level that allows you to ly move the les for about 30 minutes. Some good examples of 'steady- state' aerobic exercise are walking, running & cross-country skiing (including the indoor type). Others to be added to the list include rowing, stair climbing, jumping rope, boxing, squash or racquet ball & aerobic dancing. Approximately 40 minutes of cycling is comparable to 20 minutes of jogging. For those people who have joint pain or other health problems, water aerobics might be an alternative. Swimming per se, enhances the integrity of the cardiovascular system and tones muscles, but it doesn't really use enough muscles to effectively burn fat cells. To determine a comfortable workout level & if exercising with a partner work at a rate that - allows you to talk to them. If 'practicing on your own, be aware of your breathing pattern. Abrupt, heavy breathing signals that you are working too hard to burn fat. Also when you are unable to carry on a conversation comfortably, you have overextended the level for efficient fat metabolism. So it is possible to actually over exert yourself without the benefit of burning fat. In this circumstance, the muscles will turn 'to carbohydrates for fuel. Also, if you start an exercise going at it too vigourously, you will be apt to tire sooner & it will become less enjoyable in the long run. Walking once again comes out on top and is a highly recommended alternative for exercisers of all ages who wish to return or maintain a more active lifestyle.
