The World Cup is August 6-12 at Haverford College in Philedelphia, PA. And Claire is excited (and a bit nervous) about representing Canada in this top level competition that will bring teams « Tuesday, June 6, 1995 . from Japan, Australia, England, Wales, Scotland and the United States. Claire told the Citizen in an interview last week that the toughest competition likely will come from the American squad. "They are very good on trick shots. We will have to be ready for just about everything," she said. Claire learned just recently that she had been selected to guard the - six by six goal for the national squad which draws most of its players from Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. One thing led to another and she soon had an invitation to play for the Ontario team and it was from this squad that she was selected to the under 19 National team to compete in the World Cup. She credits Cheryl MacNeil, the goalie coach with the national team with a good deal of her success. "I would not have come this far without her help," she said. Claire has always been a keen athlete with skiing and soccer her favourite sports. To get ready for the World Cup in August, Claire will be in training six days each week for about three hours daily. The training will include working on her special skills as a goaltender and a tough fitness regimen. It won't leave her much time for much else this summer, she states. Members of the National team are responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses when they compete in August. Federal support for amateur lacrosse was cut about a month ago, the result of the last budget. Claire is hoping to line up support through ads in a World Cup program from individuals and businesses in the area to help off- set her travel expenses.
