Top fastball clubs here for the ghalienge In a span of 24 hours, the three best fastball teams on this planet will be in Port Perry. Port Perry Minor Softball officials unveiled plans last Thursday evening for the Third International Challenge coming up July 12 and 13 at the North Diamond on Water Street. And just who is coming to town those two evenings? The New Zealand National Mens team will play a double header July 12 against an all-star squad from the Oshawa City and District League, followed by game two against the powerful Greenbank Gamblers who are off to a quick start in league play this season. The next evening July 13, history will be made in Port Perry as the Toronto Gators (led by ace pitcher Darren Zack) will clash with the Green Bay Allcar Road Runners. Gators are the 1993 ISC champs and the Road Runners did the same feat in 1994. It will mark the first time that back to back champion teams face each other in an exhibition In announcing details of the International Challenge at a news conference at Pineridge Sports last week, organizer Dave Kay and Port Perry Minor Softball president Dave Dalton stressed that this double bill exhibition is to raise the profile of fastball and give fans a chance to see the best in the world. "We are trying to do our best to keep fastball on the map," said Mr. Kay. Of course, any money raised by this exhibition will be used by Minor Softball to make needed repairs to the fences at the south di d and the organi financial commitment to the new community hall at Scugog Centre, said Mr. Dalton, The Oshawa and City League all-star squad that will face the New Zealand national team July 12 will include players from both the Port Perry Junior Merchants and the Port Perry Antrim House Eagles, said Russ Gregory who will coach the stars for this e. He said the team will be more than competitive against the New Zealanders who are ranked number two in the world in mens fastball behind Canada at this time. "We will put a solid contingent on the field with strong hitting and pitching," he said. The match-up July 13 between the Gators and the Road Runners will be a real delight for fastball fans. Gators have four of the best pitching arms in the business in Darren Zack, Mark Bendahan, Randy Underwood and Oshawa native Brad Baker who is off to a ion's steaming start this season in league play with six wins and no defeats. As of last week, the Gators were 20-0. Baker said he's looking forward to meeting the Road Runners again after the Green Bay team defeated Gators in the world championship last year, Short stop Chris Jones, also an Oshawa native, said even though this will be an exhibition game, both teams will be "playing full out." Nobody likes to lose in front of a large crowd, and the game will be a tune-up for the Perth Shoot- out where the winner will take home several thousand dollars in prize money. Last summer, the International Challenge in Port Perry featured a double header between the Gators and the Sioux City Soos from Iowa, and about 3,000 people turned up to watch the action. Mr. Kay said additional bleachers will be installed on Water Street for both nights of the Challenge July 12 and 13. There will be a refreshment tent, and hot dogs from Classic Hot Dogs, a corporate sponsor for the Challenge. Admission for both evenings is $5 per person and there will be plenty of chances for the young autograph seekers and souvenir hunters. Scugog Mayor Howard Hall was at last week's press conference and praised Minor Softball for again bringing world class fastball to the community. "This will be a great promotion . for the community and Minor Softball. It's important that Minor Softball is going after this," he said. When the New Zealand squad arrives in Port Perry on July 12, the players will be official guests of the Township. Seugog Citizen -- Tuesday, June 6, 1995 -- 27 2. Jeff Kane, Matt Skerratt, and Tim all "took one for the team" to get to first. The coaches were pleased to see an overall reduction in errors by the squad in this one and the win was a real boost to our boy's morale after a tough last inning loss in overtime in our last game. On May 25th, the Legionnaires hosted Oshawa. We took a 3-1 lead into the fifth inning but a series of errors and unearned runs saw the lead evaporate. We came back to grab a further 5-3 lead but an error- filled final inning was disastrous and we handed a 7-6 win to our guests. Our offense couldn't cash in on some good chances as we left 11 men on base. Tim was collared with the pitching loss despite tossing 14 strikeouts and showing good control in giving up just one walk. Oshawa pushed 6 hits ontg the field in 7 innings. The Legion offense was led by David, -Adam and Mike Wiseman, all of whom scored 2 runs. Jeff was 2-for-2. Mike LeFort, Tim, Mike Koury and "Window" Wiseman had our other safeties. Cory showed a good pitch judgement to get 2 free passes to first. Matt Fraser and David got aboard with walks. David made his debut big RF catch in the sixth to show that practice does pay off. Devon Howsam, was alertly patrolling LF for the Legion and seems to be adapting to the move to competitive fastball.
