wp" 24 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, June 13, 1995 => Angling for Muskie in Lake Scugog by Dean Langley and Peter Bostelmann The Lake Scugog muskie may be a nuisance to some, but extremely rare for others. It seems that when the muskie is not your quarry for that day, he just shows up un-invited. But, when the sky turns overcast and the air is damp and driven by winds, it's time to get out there are on the lake and go after that trophy that could tip the scales at 30 pounds or more. The muskie is a fish of habit, staying with what they know and what works best when dinner is concerned. A pattern for muskie fishing can easily be put together with a few considerations such as time of year, water temp and weather. The time of year is probably the most important. In the winter months, muskie are concerned with eating but only by exhausting as little energy as possible. This is why many muskie are caught through the ice. They are feeding on smaller fish which are easier to catch and digest. As spring arrives and water temp rises with the break-up, they become more active. This is the largest transition in the muskie behavior cycle. It seems that muskie's blood boils and they become a ruthless eating machine. It is at this time when walleye season opens and anglers experience the true At this point, he doesn't want to just eat, he wants to hurt nature of he muskie. Opportuniecic is an d when describi this predator. He is known for attacking hooked walleye and leaving the angler empty-handed. He wants to eat in an all-he-can-eat buffet style. Once June rolls around and water temp is over 65 degrees, the muskie have calmed down somewhat and settled into an early summer habitat. This is usually a long weed bed about three to five feet deep with lots of cabbage or coontail weed--a great place to wait in ambush for the next meal. Larger muskie tend to stay close to deeper water and trenches iined with fertile weed beds. For successful muskie fishing in summer, it's important to realize that they are very territorial and will attack other fish and lures out of anger rather than hunger. So, let's not, > concentrate on feeding muskie cute little lures. You want to make him mad and tempt him with a real meal. This is where all the fun comes in. Experience has proved that a large Demon Eye doubled bladed willowleaf spinner bait does the best during summer months. The thumping of the two blades under water and the flash of silver serves to really put him in a foul mood. As the summer moves on, fish closer to shore and speed up the retrieve. August has always been the month for big, really big muskie--20 pounds plus with attitude of a 50 pounder. "This is why we use heavy line like 20 pound Berkley Trilene XT monofilament with a heavy action Quantum tour edition graphite rod and a dependable FX 500 bait casting reel. They are necessary if you have any intentions of landing the monster you've hooked. During the summer, if you have the chance to fish muskie in Lake Scugog when it's overcast--DO IT! This is when all heck breaks loose on the flats with big fish--not just muskie but bass and walleye as well. When fall approaches and the water starts to cool, it's back to serious eating for the muskie. Move out from shore on the flats and concentrate your efforts in deeper water. Slow down the retrieve and vary it. An erratic retrieve one day might work better than any other. But you'll peer know until you give it a It is important to understand that Lake Scugog is shallow with a very short growing season. So, when you catch a 20 pound muskie, he's an old one who makes new ones. Please practice catch and release at the side of the boat and don't use a net.
