Murray Brethour holds hot hand at Kawartha Less than 24 hours after his second in the Burlington Stakes with Rabbi of Racing (to the great Jennas Beach Boy), Murray Brethour was dominating the Saturday evening card at Kawartha Downs. The Sunderland reinsman won four of the Saturday events including one which took a share of a track record for Aged Pacing Mares. Shadys FG had been declared into the Fillies & Mares Preferred after a month layoff by Peterborough owner Mel McKee and trainer George Hunt. Brethour got the call to drive. It was the typical unhurried drive by Brethour as he eased the daughter of Frugal Gourmet into the three hole in the early going and got going before the half. Early fractions. were :28.2 & 59. Shadys FG had the lead in the backstretch and breezed past the third marker in 1:27.2. From there, it took a :28.4 last panel to get a share of the track standard of 1:56.1. That record has been uncontested since Tom Miller and Casimir Jade accomplished it on May 30, 1990. The duo of Hunt & McKee also got Brethour to drive Shadys KS, the 13 year old half brother to Shadys FG. That proved to be a winning combination as well when the old-timer scored his first win of the season in 1:58.2. Brethour also won with Pollikins for Lindsay owner Robert Brown and with Idylwood Intrigue for Judie Johnston of Peterborough, Oh No Stable of Toronto and Don Bray of Newcastle. The latter tdok a personal best in the process of 1:67.2. On Thursday night, the boys version of the Preferred Class brought Pitlochry N and Reg Gassien to the picture taking festivities for the second straight week. The New Zealand bred son of Plat Du Jour stormed through fractions of :28 - :5¥ - 1:26.3 to get the season's best 1:57.1 trip for Cobourg owner/trainer Ev Reid. That evening included the initial "Baby" race of the new year. Two year olds are beginning to prepare for the racing career which their owners hope will be lucrative. The first winner of the new campaign was Smooth Talking Guy. He's an Easy Goer colt out of the Big Towner dam, Forrest Towner. The breeder was Calvin Yake of Lindsay and he's now owned by Parkhill Stud Farm - Goin To the Show Stable of Peterborough and Ken Andrews of Fickering. Jason Woodward did the driving for trainer John Bax and guided the, colt to a 2:04.4 trip. Gamblers take Oshawa Juniors 1:0 to push record to 8 straight wins The 'Oshawa Junior Double 'B's' came to Ianson Park in Greenbank last Thursday night for a first place showdown with the Gamblers. Both teams were sporting identical 6-0 records and Oshawa was ready with its star pitcher Jamie Simpson from Owen Sound for this important match up in the young fastball season. And Simpson did not disappoint as he held the Greenbank team to only two hits and only six base runners during the game and retired 8 Gamblers via the strikeout route. Unfortunately for Oshawa they ran into a red hot Mark Goreski on the Greenbank mound who held the Double B's to three hits and struck out 14 Oshawa batters. The Gamblers broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning when Chris Burkholder singled to right field with two out and a miscue by the second baseman put Gambler runners on first and third. Then Brian Till hit a sharp grounder to the shortstop who had to hurry his throw to first base and drew the first baseman off the bag and Burkholder scored the games only run. However in the top of the seventh Oshawa's Scott Herriott led off with a double; then a walk and an infield single loaded the bases. But Mark Goreski bore down and struck out the final Oshawa batter to preserve the Gambler victory.
