Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, June 13, 1995 -- 31 Ah Port Juniors starting to hit their stride This sports report for the "Junior" Merchant Fastball team is sponsored by Taylor Fuels, Mike Tobin Photography, Tri-son Paving and Port Perry IGA. This past week saw the Port Perry "Junior" Merchants play .600 ball with improvement in all areas of the game in preparation for the Junior Eliminations. The Elimination draws were completed bry week Legion On June 10th, Scugog"s Rep Fastball team went to St Catherines for their first tournament of the year. It was the first tournament exposure of any type for several of the players who are playing competitive fastball for the first time. The "Gold & Blue" team got a chance to get their chins up as they beat Cobourg 8-0. Jeff Kane led the offense with 2 doubles and Matt Skerratt had 2 hits to go with a walk. Devon Howsam got on board with base paths with 2 walks and then scored 2 runs Other Port hits were by Adam Lamb and Mike LeFort. Tim Jones pitched the win for the Legion on a one-hitter with 12 strike outs and just 2 walks Our first game of the tournament was against Paris and was used as an opportunity to get some experience for our bullpen pitchers. Unfortunately our defence struggled and didn't support them well as they committed 8 errors. Mike LeFort started out at the 'one' position and notched 2 strike outs while allowing just 3 hits. He shared the pitching work with Adam who allowed 1 hit and also had a strikeout. Mike made 2 assists for outs after "comebackers". Our bats weren't lively as only Mike Wiseman and Mike Koury connected for hits. Walks were earnéd by David Akermanis, Luke Pilkey, and Cory McQuade. The team left runners stranded at third base on 3 occasions and couldn't break the Paris shutout win. Richmond Hill was our final opponent of the day. Unfortunately our bats were still cold and only Jeff, "Bullet" LeFort and Matt "Red" Foster got aboard with hits. Matt Skerratt got on with walks twice while Cory McQuade, Tim and Luke Pilkey also walked. Tim was touched for 2 first inning runs but then settled down to strike out the side in the second inning. The Legion rebounded against their Richmond Hill opponent to score 2 runs and tie the game in the second. Our third inning was promising as our first two batters singled. Unfortunately our next 3 batters looked at called third strikes to blow our momentum. Richmond Hill moved on to a 9-2 win thereafter. Tim finished with 6 strike outs. Mike pitched in relief and notched 2 K's as well. Overall the team would have been happier to win more than just the one game but still some of our goals were realized and the boys got to know each other a little better. On June 8th, the team was steam-rolled by the first place Willowdale Bears. They showed no mercy in taking extra bases on our every miscue including two passed ball scores. The Legionaires broke up their and initial comments about the teams that Port will be playing look favourable. We will advise our fans of the schedule as soon ag it is available, so that they can attend an excellent tournament in Oshawa on the weekend of July 7th-9th. On Tuesday, the classy senior men's Scarborough Royals visited Port. This game was close until the 4th inning when 6 runs Squirts shutout in the third on a sacrifice bunt squeeze by Mike Koury that allowed Matt Skerratt to slide in hard at home for our only run of the game The Legion has an inexperienced team compared to the visitors and it showed especially on defence but there were some flashes of potential to be seen. Mike Wiseman scooped a one-hopper out of the dirt at first; Jeff Kane picked up a grounder at third and threw home for a force out. Jeff also snared a hard liner as did Tim on the rubber as the Bears clubbed many balls into the field. Adam threw on a relay from Cory McQuade to the plate for a tag out at home. Tim cut off another throw from the outfield and threw to Jeff at third for a tag out there. Offensively, Adam Lamb made a perfect surprise 2 strike bunt for one of our only two hits off the tough Willowdale hurler. Adam then used his speed to reach second on a steal. Our other hit was by Tim on a single up the middle. Mike LeFort got his first game pitching experience of the season in this one and handled the pressure quite well. Next home action for the Legion Squirts in on Thursday, June 15th at the South diamond on Water St. against the Willowdale Grizzlies. Come on out and cheer us on. were scored to win the game over the Port Juniors 8-2. Venning and Card combined with Venning pitching 4 innings with 6 hits, and 5 earned runs. Card pitched 3 innings, walking 1, allowing 5 hits and 3 earned runs. On the weekend, Durham Fields was the place to be as Port participated in the Junior Tournament. This was the first testras to how they might fare in the Junior Eliminations mentioned above. The first game on Saturday was against the Quinte Juniors. Port went ahead in the first inning by one run, when McBride started with a walk and was in a position to steal home on a passed hii. This proved to be the only run of a tight ball game, until the 6th inning when a Quinte player was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, and the team defaulted due to no more eligible players remaining on the bench. Port was officially awarded the game as a 6-0 win. Until the 6th inning, Card had a no-hitter going, striking out 3 with no walks. The second game, Port met a persistent Aurora Juvenile team who have been doing very well in the league. The game was tied 2- 2 going into the 6th, when Moase hit a single to score Ryan Burkholder with the go-ahead run. This won the game 3-2. Swift pitched 7 innings, striking out 11, walking 1, giving up 3 hits and no earned runs. In the third game, Port met the tournament favourites - the Oshawa Juniors. Oshawa quickly went ahead with a quick run in the first, which Port countered with a run of their own in the third. In the 4th inning, the teams again traded runs and the 2-2 tie remained going into the 7th. The Port Juniors' bats came alive when Cochrane started the inning with a triple, and four runs were scored to end the game as a 6-2 Kids rollerhockey After an exciting first evening, Rollerhockey at Scugog Arena promises to be a kids favourite. The program is being run as a shinny night that invites kids aged 8-12 to join in on this new and exciting sport. The program is open to boys and girls. Every Tuesday night in June and July, Rollerhockey will be offered at the Arena. Warmups begin at 6:30 p.m. and play takes place in the form of 3-15 minute periods. Volunteer parents handle the coaching duties, while play is refereed. Kids are organized so that they are competing against other kids the same age and skill level. Full equipment is mandatory for children's safety. This includes shinpads, elbowpads, kneepads, hockey or padded pants, shoulderpads, and a hockey helmet with a full cage. Players use hockey sticks that are not taped. The cost of the program is $3.50/person/night and goalies are admitted free. For more information, please call the arena at 985-8698. Family fun on a Tigershark Sitting around and watching the tube. It's certainly one way a family can spend time together. However, we'd like to suggest another option. Buy a Montego, or Monte Carlo from Tigershark, and your family will have some real fun together. These powerful machines zip through the water with the greatest of ease with or without passengers on the back. Besides the fun of cruising, there's plenty of room to pack lunches, take the fishing or snorkeling gear along - and even pull a water skier. These sharks have loads of extras, plenty of power, smooth, dry rides and prices that won't soak your wallet. But, best of all - with the Montego and Monte Carlo, you'll never get a re-run. You can preview these at Clark's Cats, 12730 Simcoe Street, 2 miles south of Port Perry, or call us at 985-9312. * Bonus: Clark's Cats has 15% off all parts, accessories & clothing for the month of June. win for the Port Merchants. The win over the Oshawa Juniors has been a long time coming and Port felt very confident the progress they have made in the last three weeks. This advanced the Port "Juniors" into the "A" division with a perfect record of 3 and 0 for the day. On Sunday morning, Port met the Junior team from North Fred whose pitcher kept the Port players off guard by mixing his pitching. Going into the bottom of the 5th, Port was behind on a 3-0 score and started a rally of its own. Unfortunately, the only run scored was Smart on a RBI single by Empringham. In the 6th, Port threatened again but Ryan Burkholder and Card were left stranded on base. The final score was 4-1 for North Fred and Port "Juniors" were abruptly eliminated from the tournament. Card, Swift, Venning combined for 7 innings of pitching, striking out 7, walking 1, and allowing 8 hits and 4 earned runs. This game will be treated as an excellent experience for the type of pitching the Port team will be facing at the Junior Elims. Even though the week-end was somewhat of a disappointment, overall strides were made in all aspects of the game which will hopefully be carried into future games and tournaments. Hitters for the week were: Ryan Burkholder- walk, single, double, RBI; Rich Burkholder- walk, 5 singles, RBI; Card-walk, single, double, triple; Cochrane- walk, single, triple, RBI; Empringham-single, RBI; Laird- single; McLennan-3 singles, 3 RBI, McBride-4 walks, single; Moase-2 walks, 2 singles, RBI; Smart-single; Vander Slagt- walk, single, double, triple, RBI. Future games: Tuesday, June 13 - Markham vs Port Juniors, Thursday, June 15 - Port vs Finns 8:30 at Durham Fields, Thursday, June 22 - Oshawa Juniors vs Port Juniors. The opening weeks of the Midget schedule were not very good to the club, however, last Thursday things pulled together. Newmarket was the opposition and in the early innings, jumped into a 4-0 lead. In the third inning, Port started to put things together, scoring two runs and shutting down the opposition. In the fourth inning, Port's offence went to work and scored 5 runs as the club batted through the order and showed spirited base running.
