Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, June 13, 1995 -- 7 - Most boaters will pay $5 fee BBQ June 17 for a worthy cause Most boaters are not going to object too strenuously to paying a $5 fee to get their crafts in the water at the municipal launch in Port Perry, according to an informal survey by the Citizen over the weekend. Scugog council wants to start the $5 launching fee on July 1 and collect it over the summer months on Saturdays, Sundays and holiday Mondays. Council called it a "pilot project," and pledged that the revenue from the launch fee will be used strictly for repairs and up-grades to the launching area just north of Birdseye Park. It's a busy place, especially on weekends, and at peak times boaters wait 20 minutes or more to get their boats into the water. The Citizen spoke with more than 20 boaters at the launching site over the weekend and found that well over half would not object to the $5 fee, especially if council follows through with the promise to turn the money back into the facility. "It's a very nice facility. It's only fair that non-residents should pay," said an Oshawa boater who comes to Lake Scugog every weekend for +a day of fishing. Another Oshawa boater who also uses the launch frequently during the summer months, said he would not object to the user fee. "I hope they (council) use the money for repairs," he said. He also suggested that yearly pass might be appropriate, for $20 or $25 One Port Perry man who uses the launch at least twice each week said he is not fussy about paying a $5 fee when his tax dollars are being used on the facility. He suggested Township residents should be exempt from paying the user fee. On the negative side a boater from King City said the $5 fee will force him to find another place to get his boat into the lake. "This is just one more cost to go fishing. Yes, I would really object and I know other places to launch a boat for nothing," he said. The same comments were made by a Bowmanville man who said he'll put his boat in the water at Caesarea. He went on to say that it's getting expensive for a day's fishing. "Gas, minnows, it all adds up. I'll take that $5 and buy lunch somewhere," he said. One of the main reasons he uses the Port Perry launch is because it's free. When told that the fee will be charged between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM, one boater told the Citizen he will just get up earlier and get to the boat launch area before 6:00 in the morning on the weekend. "I think you'll see a lot of boats going into the water before six o'clock," he stated. Meanwhile, Scugog council agreed on Monday to allow residents of the Township to purchase season long passes at $25 each. Dirt bike crash puts boy in coma A 13-year old Scugog youth remained in a coma Monday night in Sick Childrens Hospital with head injuries suffered in a dirt bike mishap on Sunday. Police said the accident that sent Stephen Wygerde to hospital took place late Sunday afternoon in a farm field on the Nestleton Road. According to Durham Police, the youth was discovered by Graham Trowler, a British citizen visiting at a farm near the accident. He spotted the over-turned Suzuki dirt bike and when he went to investigate found Stephen nearby, semi-conscious, unable to talk and in a great deal of pain. The youth was taken first to Port Perry Hospital and later transferred to Sick Childrens in Toronto. Police said it is believed he was wearing a helmet at the time of the mishap, but was jarred from his head as it was found several feet away. @ PARA WE'VE DISCOVERED THE DIFFERENCE ...
