my" 24 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, June 20, 1995 CITIZEN SPORTS Royals hand first loss to Gamblers The Scarborough Royals rode into Ianson Park in Greenbank last Thursday night and in a see- saw battle that saw the lead change hands on five separate handed the Gambl their first loss of the Oshawa City & District League Season. Byron Baranieski and Mark Goreski shared the Greenbank pitching while Ken McConnell and Blair McBratney saw service on the mound for Scarborough. It was a perfect night for baseball and the large crowd on hand were treated to a most entertaining fastball game, as the hitters on both teams lined balls to all areas of Greenbank ball park. Paul Foucault of the Royals and Greg Newell of the Gamblers were the big hitters on' the night as they both had two home runs apiece to pace the hitting attack. First Greenbank had the lead, then the Royals, then the Gamblers again as the game wore on but finally Scarborough broke a 4-4 deadlock in the sixth inning and hung on for a 5-4 win and create a four team first place logjam. . Greenbank, Scarborough Royals, Oshawa heat and Oshawa Juniors are all virtually tied for top spot after the first third of the 1995 season, with each team suffering only a single loss. Next Thursday night the Gamblers wii host Brampton at lanson Park at 8pm. On the weekend, Greenbank played in the Baltimore Tournament which they had won for the past three years. But the Law of Averages caught up to the Gamblers as they came home this time empty handed. They opened the tournament on Saturday morning and behind the hot pitching of Byron Baranieski, they defeated the "North Fred" Jrs. (Napanee) by a 1-0 score. Mark Goreski came off the bench to drive in Pete Oosterholt with the game's only run and gave Greenbank their sixteenth consecutive win in Baltimore over the last 4 years. Their luck finally ran out in game 2 as they out hit the Oshawa Jrs. by 8 to 3 but could not get the clutch hit(s) that could have given them the win and left eleven men on base as they bowed to the Oshawa team by a 2-0 score. Sunday saw a similar situation as they outhit the Scarborough Royals but again they coyld not get the key hit(s) with men in scoring position and suffered a 3- 1 setback and they were out of the tournament. The Gamblers are an excellent defensive club and rarely beat themselves with shoddy fielding, but on Sunday, some infield miscues led directly to Scarborough scoring two of their three runs. Goreski and Baranieski pitched well for the Greenbank club during the tournament and Chris Burkholder led the team attack with 5 solid hits. Mark Goreski and Brian Till each had three hits with Goreski also driving in a pair of runs. Steve Durham and Greg Newell with 2 hits each were the only other Gamblers with more than one hit. The long July 1st weekend will seek Greenbank in Napanee at the International Softball Congress Double Knockout Tournament for Senior Softball clubs for Eastern Ontario. And if the Oshawa City & District League is already a tough league, look out for the Bradford Sox who have acquired Mike Sedore for their pitching staff. Sedore has spent the past three years pitching for the Toronto Gators and he led Bradford to the finals this week in Baltimore. ug Telecopy Systems of Barrie defeated Cartwright Long Gone to win the Competive Division of the Second Annual Mixed Slo-pitch tournament held over the weekend.
