wm 32 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, June 20, 1995 Have the house inspected before you buy How many times have you talked with your friends and relatives about the things that go wrong after you buy your "dream home". Anything from leaking basements and roofs to poor electrical and plumbing systems, there are many upsetting stories, being told even as we speak! There is an inexpensive solution. Why not have a professional home inspection done? Good question, why not? The reason that I feel most people don't have a professional inspect their homeé is that sometimes people's pride get in the way of their better judgement. With comments such as "Why shguld we pay them to do a job that I/we/uncle Bob or whoever, could do ourselves". Right. Wrong! Many people are discovering that there really is np comparison to a professional inspection by a certified 'and fully insured home inspector These inspectors have many, many years of home and industrial construction training, just to qualify to enroll in a certified - home inspection program. The third step is to find a Company who will spend the time and sit down with you and listen to your ideas and needs and as well give you suggestions. Never let the salesperson push you into something that you do not like or want. Rémember, this is your kitchen and you have to be happy with what you purchase for a long time. The fourth step would be the selection of cabinet door styles and standard cabinet sizes (remember, if it is a standard size it will be less expensive then a custom cabinet). You also have to look at the construction of the cupboard itself, the thickness of the box walls and" shelves - do they have backs - are the shelves adjustable and how thick is the finish of the box. Did you know that the melamine finish comes in several different gradés? Look at the fiardware such as hinges - do they use a no-name hinge that has no guarantee or do they use a lifetime hinge like Grass® that stands behind their product. Look at the drawer boxes - how thick is the bottom and how strong are the sides, how much will they hold. The fifth step would be accéssories - you 'may want to add the convenience of a turn shelf (lazy susan), spice rack, cutlery tray, tip- out soap trays, roll-out shelves, garbage can or recycling bins and plus many mare options to choose from. Remember, options can be added at a later date if desired. ~ The sixth 2casion is countertop, colour and style and 'with approximately eighty standard colours and hundreds of other shades and textures that is available to you and about eight , different profiles. The seventh decision will be choice of handles or knobs - can they colour co-ordinate with your countertop or with something else in the room. Installation is, number eight, will this Company do the whole installation including plumbing, electrical and drywall or will they bring in other trades, which may cause delays and increase the cost. Please be sure to ask for references or look at pictures of this Company's work. The ninth step will be flooring, can this Company supply you with new flooring for your new kitchen and install it at the same time, so that it does not cause any unnecessary delays. The tenth and final decision - am I going to be happy dealing with this Company and do I feel confident with the product and the staff? If the answer is yes then the decision / is yours.
