mp" Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, June 20, 1995 --3 A. Council not "booting YMCA out of building" Scugog Township is not "booting the YMCA out of its building" on Que¢n Street, - regional councillor Marilyn Pearce told the Citizen last week. . Negotiations between the Y and the Township, she continued, have been on-going for several months to have the Y move from its present Queen * Street location to the new Scugog Centre facility at the Arena once it's finished later this summer. Several letters from Port Perry residents objecting to any move by the.Y from its present location were submitted to the Township and this newspaper late last week: (see letters page in this edition) Councillor Pearce said YMCA officials have been receptive to the idea of moving to the new Scugog Centre. She said the Township would like to reach an agreement whereby the Y would manage the Centre from Monday to Thursday. Moving to the new facility would also aflow the Y to" create new programs for residents without a cost to the taxpayers. She said there has been no indication from Y officials that. they are opposed to moving from the downtown location. "If they are opposed, they should tell us," she said. Counéilfor Pearce confirmed that the local Chamber of Commerce/BIA is interested in using the upper floor of the ¥% building for offices. Rent from the Chamber and BIA would he used to up-grade the building and grounds, she said. The issue came up briefly at Monday's planning meeting of council. Ward 1 rep Doug Moffatt said the move to Scugog Centre by the Y is a "win/win" situation as there would be more space for additional programs. Councillor Pearce said the letter writers had not contacted her to find out the facts about thesituation. Negotiations between the Township and the Y will continue and if an agreement can be reached, the final OMB hearing scheduled for August The Ontario Municipal Board has set August 15 for a hearing into the plans by Scugog Township "to create three building lots on vacant municipal land at the corner of Old Scugog Street and Greensboro Drive in Blackstock. 1 qd Several Cartwright résid are strongly opposed to these plans and launched the appeal with the OMB. The ultimate aim of the Township in creating these three lots was to sell them and use the NCS TEL. Port Perry lawyer Michael Fowler willbe retained by the Township to handle the legal matters at the hearing, planner Kennedy Self will present planning evidence, and Golder and Associates have been retained to present soil analysis information. Meanwhile, Township staff is recommending that the three lots be serviced with municipal water at a cost of $73,000, about doubl what 'it would cost to place thr wells. The report, which was presented to council on Monday, says piped water would remove any, objections from neighbours t three new wells would h&@ve an adverse impact on existing wells. The lease between the Y and the Township for the Queen Street. building expires this September. contracts will be ready for approval at the July 10 meeting, the last one before council breaks for the summer. . Rachell Hall and Chris Kellar (right) both of Port Perry were first time donors at the Red Cross blood clinic at the Masonic Hall last week. Both said giving blood for the first time was no big deal and they'll be back at the next clinic September 13th. With them is Peter Miles, who coordinates the clinic at the Lodge. There were 150 donors. 2 Gui //, 81h kilt om | (1 _] \ | 1\7 ote | -]S as lle =| (excluding shoes) 9:00 PM t0:MIDNIGHT up to "0% OFF All SUMMERXASHIONS All sales final.
