Z Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, July 11, 1995 -- 37 > Pee Wee MoJacks reach semi finals The Pee Wee Mojacks travelled to Stratford for the - weekend of June 24-25 to participate in a tournament there that they've attended the last three years. The skies were bright and sunny and the temperature hot when they took to the diamond for game one against Glencoe. Mark Richardson took to the mound and allowed 3 hits, and 3 walks while striking out 3 over the fist 5 innings. Chris Jones came on in relief in the sixth striking out one with no free passes and no hits. On the offense, Mike Versage led the attack with 3 singles. He was followed by Darryl Dalton with a pair while Jones picked up a triple. Further singles went to Jeff Ashton, Ryan McBride, Aaron Lycett, and Richardson. Port went on to win the opener 5-1. 'The defensive highlight making this week in baseball occurred when Jones, while playing first had a ball bounce off his glove directly to Dalton who was coming over to cover the base promptly stepping on the bag for the out. The next game had the squad up against Monkton whom they handily defeated by a 10-0 tally. Jones started on the rubber and went the distance allowing only 1 walk, 5 hits, and striking out 7. Versage again held a torrid bat as he picked up 3 singles. Ashton added a triple and single to the barrage while Matt Sturgess picked up a double. Singles went to Ryan McQuade, Jones, Pete McKitterick, and Nick Isaacs. The defense was cracking just as well with McBride at shortstop coming around behind second for a running catch. Not to be outdone Dalton made an over the shoulder grab and Sean Jeffrey nabbed a dying quail out in centre. The finakgame on Saturday saw the team take on Rockwood with Ryan McBride throwing the complete game allowing 5 hits while striking out 7. Richardson took over the big-bat as he went 2 for 3 with a double and a single. McQuade, Ashton, and McKitterick added singles to the tally leading the team to a 9-1 win, Pete also made' a nice shoestring catch out in the field during the fifth inning for the defensive play of the game. First thing Sunday morning the boys had to face a strong squad out of Waterford for first place in the five team division. At this pint both teams were going on to the different "A" semi-finals. McBride took the loss in this one but not before it looked like a real dogfight midway through with the score 2-1 for Port going into the fourth where Waterford took over a 3-2 lead. Mick only gave up 2 walks and struck out 2 in the process. McQuade crushed a ball to left field for a homerun in the first inning to get things started. McBride grabbed himself a double with Versage, Ashton, Joneg and Reid McTaggart all contributing singles. McKitterick also laid down a nige bunt for a hit. This ocod the team in second place for divisional play and they had to go on to meet the host Stratford team in the semi-final. With the score "deadlocked at 0-0 after 1 1/2 innings the skies opened up and we suffered through a rain delay of 90 thinutes. Adding insult te injury the diamonds were unuseable resulting in a trek across town. Jones pitched the entire game showing great control allowing just 1 walk, giving up 9 hits and striking out 7. The Stratford quick pitching seemed to hand cuff the bats that had been booming high. McQuade and Jones were the only 2 Port batters to pick up hits, each attaining a single. The end result was a 3-0 Stratford win, but the boys again displayed their talents on this weekend and were not shamed at any time. Ryan McBride started on the rubber and pitched 4 innings allowing 3 hits, and 1 walk while notching 5 K's. Jones followed in behind for the final 3 innings and struck out 4 while allowing no base runners in facing 9 batters. Jeff and Chris each picked up 2 singles with McQuade adding a lone single. In picking up the 3-1 victory the Mojack's league record now stands at 11 and 1 with them taking to the road for the next 2 weeks. Gamblers look a bit like the Jays The Greenbank Gamblers appear to have been following the efforts of the Blue Jays during the past two weeks as they went down to defeat to the Scarborough Royals last Thursday night in Scarborough by a 6-0 count. The Royals Blair McBratney shut out the Gamblers on only two hits and claimed 13 Gambler batters as strike out victims during the contest. Don Beaton was the only Greenbank batter to solve McBratney's pitching as he collected a pair of base hits and reached base in this third at bat courtesy of a low throw from the Scarborough short stop. The rest of the Gambler squad came up empty although the Royals right fielder made a great catch of a long Greg Newell drive in the mammoth Thompson Park outfield. Byron Baranieski was on the Greenbank pitching mound and gave up a total of twelve base 'hits to the 'heavy hitting Royals. However in light of the lack of Gambler offense it would have taken a shutout effort by Baranieski to gain a Greenbank point. The Gamblers have picked a poor time to go into a slump with the heavy part of the schedule coming up and also meeting the New Zealand i National Team in Port Perry this Wednesday night. Also coming up quickly is the Ontario OASA Elimination Tournament in Napanee on July 28,29,30. There is no easy way out of a slump and the Gamblers will have to dig down and scratch and claw their way back to playing winning fastball. The next home game for Greenbank will be on Thursday, July 20th when Markham will visit the Gamblers for an 8pm game at Ianson Park. Jan LEER POOLS & SPAS THE oats MAKE a 10th ANNIVERSARY SPLASH!
