Z Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, July 11, 1995 -- 5 A Durham Region will almost certainly abandon the search for a new garbage dump site in the Region. "From what I understand, there will be no search for a green field site in Durham," said Scugog"s Regional councillor Marilyn Pearce last week after the newly elected Conservative government at Queens Park ordered the dismantling of the Interim Waste Authority (TWA), Councillor Pearce, a member of the Works committee at Regional council went on to say "personally, I don't think we will ever see a new garbage dump opened here in Durham." She suggested Durham will concentrate on two options as methods of disposing the garbage generated in the Farewell Epsom PS This group of grade six students sald good bye to Epsom Public School at graduation ceremonies recently. The IWA spent about $80 million in three years and according to many did not advance the process of finding a method of disposing of garbage in the GTA. Councillor Pearce said she is not unhappy to see the IWA disappear saying the issue of garbage disposal is "better addressed at the Regional level." Durham continues to get-rjd of its trash at the Metro Toronto owned Brock West dump in Pickering. But it will fill up before the end of the century. Councillor Pearce said a crucial part of the trash issue in Durham is to step up re- cycling that can prolong the life " OVER 6000 SQFT, of SHOWROOM | Furniture, Appliances, TV, VCR and more! As for incineration, she said new advancements in technology have made this a viable option that must be followed. She suggested that an incineration facility could serve all the municipalities in the GTA. With the dismantling of the IWA, the task of finding a way to get rid of trash has been returned to- the Regional municipalities. "The job of the provincial government is to oversee the environmental assessment process and to set environmental standards, not to assume the responsibility of municipalities," sdif Premier Harris in a statement July 5. Rail haulage or incineration would be subject to stringent environmental hearings before one or both options are approved. » t FAMOUS tha Gan evens | Canada's UNITED CARPET ll 'evolor: E& } OVER 2000 SAMPLES ® ae - original ECORATIN, A a oon BLINDS Can't think [for you and § © © wd amartercl eyes [i VERTICALS VENETNS of the each friend with COL ECTIBY ; i ; i HOMESTEAD by Ballard & Carnegie appropriate Hep With nis SHOW & SALE HWY. 7A EAST - PORT PERRY 985-2451 or 985-2157 words? ad, only $4, 00each Ji RATING - 5 Free Delivery B Installation B Easy Credit Jerms n HEIRLOOMS FLOWERS say it alll * PERSONAL TOUCH Floral & Gift Shop 209 MARY ST., PORT PERRY (across from LCBO) 985-9360 | Free Parking Door Prizes Gao MARKHAM JULY. {416 FAIRGROUNDS 225 PLATTEN BLVD., PORT PERRY, ONT.
