At the M Z Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, July 11, 1995 -- 7 on with Heather n Voyage into space certainly had its moments APOLLO 13 Tom Hanks, Gary Sinese, Bill Paxton, Kevin Bacon, Ed Harris, Kathleen Quinlan In Whitby I really wanted to review the Canada Day celebrations but I have to keep in mind this is a professional movie column (HA). Just a quick word about the celebrations, wonderful-incredible- exciting-entertaining-fun- beautiful-great music-lots of patriotism-great planes-great food- and finally beautifully organized, is that a word? Monday started as any other day except everyone was home. mentioned that we should finish off the weekend with a bang and go to a movie. "Sure mom, Power Rangers". "You buying?" My husband can be so funny sometimes. Apollo 13 would be great, my husband would remember it well, he is a lot older than me, history lesson for the kids and terrific movie material for me. My name Police Report An overnight break-in July 9- 10 netted thieves cash from a downtown Port Perry store. Durham Police say the window in the front door at the Kids Store on Queen Street was smashed to gain entry into the shop. Once inside, thieves ransacked filing cabinets and broke open a cash box. They got away with a small . amount of money. Nothing else was stolen, according to Police. Durham Police are also investigating a daytime robbery July 5 at a home on Durham Road 57, a couple of miles south of Blackstock. Police say thieves broke through a patio door on the east side of the residence while the home owners were away. Once inside, they ransacked the bedrooms before getting away with a quantity of money, liquor, jewelry and video equipment. was mud after about 20 minutes, "this is boring, why are they dressed liked that?," and finally "why did they wear their hair like that?" Ron Howard directed this film, and oh what a film it is, kids just can't appreciate the technicalities of a movie this big. It was exciting and nerve wracking. It had a little, no a lot of technical jargon. "Why did they blow parts of the rocket off?" "Well it is supposed to come apart." "Thats wasting, isn't it recyclable?" "Not exactly, the space program has changed a lot since then and now the space ship is recyclable"..blah, blah, blah. Listening to them talk is like listening to another movie in a movie. | It was the 13th minute, in the 13th hour of the 13th day in Apollo 13, isn't that cool? The only thing missing was that it wasn't on a Friday. Feeling superstitious yet? One of the astronauts wrote it off by saying "just yesterday I let a black cat walk on a broken mirror under the ladder of the spacecraft and nothing happened" (yet). Whatever could go wrong with this mission did. It started with the measles. ne fellow was taken off the mission b it was incident happened in 1970 and for the first time we see what really went on at the space centre and in ~ the craft itself. Great movie! thought that he had the measles, he didn't, but another was allowed on with the flu. The oxygen tanks® blew, when they sealed the leak they had to move back to the lunar module, there they were being poisoned by carbon monoxide, they had to drop most of the power at which time the craft was below freezing, then during re-entry they were burning up and finally at the landing site there were typhoon warnings. What a bad day! Ron Howard did a great job, (Opy, hard to believe), fabulous camera work, building tension every mile of the way. Even though Tom Hanks (two time Oscar winner; was the heavyweight actor in this movie he didn't stand out above anyone else. He didn't have a bigger role, he wasn't the leading man. No one said more than one or two lines at a time. Time was the most important commodity in this film and not one moment was wasted on boredom. It is interesting to remember this 3rd Annual Beach Parry Saturday.
