L Catholic Church hit w When Father Charlie Faleiro opened the doors of Immaculate Conception Church in Port Perry last Wednesday morning, * he noticed flowers from a vase strewn about the floor near the lobby. On further investigation, he could hardly believe what he was seeing. Father Charles Faleiro looks over the damage caused by vandals last week at Port Perry's Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Scugog Street. See story above for detalls. Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, July 18, 1995 -- 3 Pr Prayer books were scattered among the pews, candles had been thrown on the floor, the Sacrementory Book had been taken from its place on the alter, pages torn out and tossed on the floor. A large statue of Ste. Anne, the grandmother of Jesus, had been toppled from its stand and lay in pieces on the floor. Fr. Charlie, as he is known to his parishioners was shocked and deeply troubled at what he describes as this incident of "complete vandalism." Whoever got into the church on Scugog Street overnight July 11- 12 took nothing. Entry was gained by smashing a stained glass window at the front of the church. Whoever got in there must have been a small person as the hole was tiny and surrounded by shards of jagged lass. Fr. Charlie assumes that whoever wiggled through that tiny hole then went to the front door and un-locked it to let others in. He notified Durham Police who dusted for fingerprints. He also issued a plea for anyone who may have any information about this act of violence to contact Durham Police Crime Stoppers (436-8477 1-800-978-8477). Cash awards are available for information leading to an arrest, the person tipping of police remains anonymous and does not need to testify in court. Tr Charlia told the Citizen it "violence. at sure what it will cost to replace the Spanish-made statue of Ste. Anne, but it will be several hundred dollars, at least. This is the second act of Immaculate Conception inside two weeks. Overnight on July 1, the front doors were scorched by flames set by kerosene. Fr. Charlie has ith vandalism no way of knowing if the two incidents are related. Shaking his head sadly as he showed the vandalism to a Citizen reporter last week, he said "in Port Perry, we just don't expect these things to happen. In the big cities, maybe, but here, no." Poachers fined Two men have received hefty fines after being found guilty of unlawfully hunting at night, or "jacklighting" as it's commonly called. Justice of the Peace W. Jacklin fined the 59 year olds from Toronto and Sutton a total of $6,000 after finding them guilty in Lindsay Provincial court earlier this month. As well, a high powered .243 cal. hunting rifle was ordered permanently confiscated, and the two have had their hunting rights suspended for two years. The charges were laid last December during a surveillance operation in Eldon Township by Ministry of Natural Resources Conservation officers. They observed a high powered spot- light directed.into farm fields from a moving vehicle. MNR Conservation Officer Mitch Phinney said jacklighting is a "dangerous and unethical practice of hunting deer. Conservation officers are committed to arresting all individuals who participate in jacklighting". He urged the public to assist Conservation officers by reporting any kinds of illegal hunting activities.
