wp 6 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, July 18, 1995. Port Perry runner at world clas Jim Geer is in some pretty elite company this week as he competes in the 11th annual World Veterans Track and Field Championships on campus at the University of Buffalo, New York. More than 5500 athletes from 74 countries are there for this world championship competition which is held every two years for men over 40 years of age and women over 35. Jim, who lives in Port Perry is 41 and this is his first year of eligibility. "I'm just another rookie out there," he said with a smile in an interview with the Citizen before leaving for Buffalo last Friday to be part of the opening ceremonies. Jim is competing in several events--the 200 and 400 m, sprints; the 110 and 400 m 'hurdles and as part of the four- man Canadian relay team. Love from the Family Howard and Zula Hall, Port Perry ore very pleased to announce of their daugh CATHRIN D. HALL "masters" athletes in the world, including many former Olympians, Jim is realistic enough to say his chances of a medal are very remote at best. I could (finish) in the top 25 e world, that would be just fine," he said. However, he said the Canadian relay team is capable of putting up some good times and just could have an outside shot at finishing in the top three. After battling a foot mide in recent months, Jim said he's fit, feeling good and ready to give it his best. Two weeks ago in Lansing Michigan, at the American championships, he placed third in the 400 m. hurdles against some extremely quick competition. And he recently won two silver medals in the Canadian Veterans championships in the 400 m and 110 m hurdles. Winning medals is fine, said Jim and what every athlete strives for at this level of competition. But it's more than that. "It is friendly competition," he explained and a chance to rub elbows with the best in the world. The five day a week training schedule, the endless hours on the track, the hundreds of miles on the stationary bike and of course the competitions, all keep Jim trim, fit and healthy. He continued to enter triathlons and mid-distance races of eight or ten km. He trimmed his weight nearly 40 pounds and says he feels 100 per cent better than he did five years ago. Jim switched from middle distance to hurdles and sprints because he found he was having better results in competition. "I guess if you are doing well at something, you tend to stay with it," he explains. . Two years from now, the Veterans Warld championships will be held in South Africa, a bit too far away and expensive for Jim. However, four years from now, the event will be in either Canada or Ireland. Jim, who is employed at General Motors pays his travel and accommodation expenses when he competes at meets. The Canadian Auto Workers Union agreed to pay the cost of the entry fee for recent meets, which helps. Jim, his wife Diane, daughter Jaime and son Keenan will be in Buffalo about a week at the World Championships. Swimming programs Trying to beat the heat on hot summer nights?
