Organic growers tour Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, July 25, 1995 -- 15 ~~ Scugog Township farm " . About 25 organic growers from "oul + Durham across Durham Region paid a visit Saturday to the farm of Bit and Penny Reid, just north of Port Perry. The 200 acre Reid farm on Scugog Line 8 has been certified for two years as "chemical free," by the Organic Crop Improvement Association International, and it is one af just 3,000 farms in the world. The tour last Saturday gives organic growers a chance to get together, socialize and share tips and ideas on organic farming, 'Composters for-- the backyard a bargain at $15 Region's 1995 Backyard Composter "Truckload Sales" were more successful than ever! The events, held this spring at ten different locations across the Region, resulted in the sale of more than 6,500 composters. The one-day events offered $15 backyard composting units to Durham residents. During the day, Regional staff provided free "how-to" "workshops, and distributed literature on the basics of caring for your composter. "The high level+ of public participation in these events is a clear indication of the dedication to waste reduction being made by residents of the Region", says Jack McCorkell, Director of Operations. "Backyard composting is an effective way to reduce the amount of materials going to landfill by up to one third." The Region extends their "Thanks" to the manufacturers of the composters for their outstanding efforts in promoting the events, and to all of the composter distributors who hosted these events. "In 1994, the total number of composters sold was 6,700. Sales from this year's Truckload Sales alone represent 97% of all the composters sold last year", reports Peter Watson, Manager of Waste Reduction. "Durham residents are becoming more . enthusiastic about composting and this is great news!" To date, the Region has distributed over 42,000 composters through their Backyard Composting, Program. The Reids produce a wide variety of veggies on the farm, including beets, corns, carrots, cucumbers, zucchini, salad greens, potatoes, tomatoes, squash broccoli and onions. This year's crop is coming along fairly well, said Penny, but there was a bit too much rain early in June, right after the planting. This year the Reids will be wholesaling some of the produce locally at Valu Mart, IGA and Herbally Yours, as well as at the Brock - Vieveen's.
