After a period of inactivity, the Port Perry Junior Merchants were back on the diamond last week and tried to get themselves Merchants swing back in action back into playing shape by being involved in four ball games. On Monday, Port travelled to Markham and the game turned out to be a real pitching duel between Jeff Card and Cam, the Markham pitcher, Both teams left plenty of base runners, but unfortunately it was Markham who struck in the bottom of the ninth with a long sacrifice ball to score the only run of the game. Card struck out 12, walked 3, allowed only 5 hits and no earned runs. On Tuesday night, the Oshawa Heat were in town with their usual powerful lineup, and Brad Bricknell's grand slam in the first inning put the Junior Merchants in a deep hole. In the second, Cochrane reached base on a single and was moved to third on a Laird single and scored on an Empringham RBI single. In the bottom of the sixth, the home side scored four runs when Card, MacLennan, McBride, and Moase were driven in by timely hitting. Larmer and Klei doubled, McCourt and Anchor with a pair of singles each and Minshall and Chapman with singles, Rob Wallace shut the door and grabbed the win, pitching in the bases loaded final inning, For Grumbles Davidson with 38 singles, Dales doubled and singled, Watson scored 3 runs, Sutherland, Tripp, Baker, Dunn, Hill and Tiessen all had: singles. BANTAM DIVISION CYC Panthers 11, Port Perry IGA 0 Despite a game effort by IGA who played short-handed, the Panther pitching staff of Drew Stephenson, David Young and MacKenzie Bell came just one single short of a no hitter. Panthers struck 4 batters out and strong infield defense stopped IGA cold. Panther runners stole 27 bases. Darryl McClurg, Mac Bell, David Young and John Chrapek punched out singles and Ben Stephenson singled 3 times for 2 RBIs. A special nod to John Berry for a well played game. In game one Claire Reed Cassells tossed a 1-0 one hitter for Port Perry over Chingucosy Srs. Tracy Smith made some great catches in centre field to anchor the defence. In game two Andrea Peters tossed a three hitter against Oshawa Jrs. in a 4-1 win. Mary Jo McCarthy and Joanne Graham had two hits apiece. Pitcher Andrea Peters recorded eight strikeouts. In game three, Angela Davis pitched a 6-4 win against an aggressive London Jr. team. Port pounded out 14 hits. with Graham hitting two triples and McCarthy with three hits. Renee Sheldon had a big night defensively. Game four, Angela Davis pitched a 6-1 win over Waterford tossing a four hitter. Tracy Smith and Jocelyne Kwan had three hits piece. Joyce Parkinson with two hits including a triple. Joanne Graham had a three run double. The playoff round started as Port Perry, 4-0 in division play, faced Toronto VM Srs. The game went eight innings with Andrea Peters pitching a 2- 1 win. Andrea gave up six hits and had two hits in the game." Shortstop Mary Jo McCarthy vacations. ¢ On Saturday night; the Port Juniors played a double header against the top first year Midgets in Ontario. There were 33 midgets from across the province involved in a weekend evaluation camp based in Oshawa. These players were all competing for a spot an a select Midget team which will participate in the Canadian Games in 1996. In the first game, Port Jaimped ahead into a 3-1 lead but unfortunately the Midgets were able to score a run in each of the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings to win this evenly played game by a score of 4-3. Port left eight base runners stranded and in the sixth inning, with bases loaded, were unable to bring home that tying run. Card pitched six innings, striking out 3, walking 2, allowing 7 hit and 2 earned runs. In the second game, the team welcomed back Denis Smith, a former player to help out the depleted pitching staff for this double header. Port struck early scoring 2 runs, and the score made some great defensive plays for outs and contributed three hits and scored the winning run. Port faced a strong Kitchener Jr. team with 'Claire Reed Cassells holding a strong hitting Kitchener team to six hits and a 3-2 win. Andrea Peters' three hits and Tracy Smith and Renee Sheldon's fine defencive play in the outfield securedPort's sixth win. The team was downito only Jen Sharp to catch all the games and she really played a big part as she was outstanding behind the plate. Kim Stewart batted for Jen and had spme key hits throughout the tournament and showed the i team work the girls have. Chrysler remained 2-1 going ints the 7tK. In the top of the seventh, the Junior Merchants scored an additional 2 runs to have a commanding 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Midgets did not give up and the abilities for which they were chosen for these try-outs paid off when they got some timely hitting to score 3 earned runs. This entertaining game, which ended in a 4-4 tie was-@t pleasure to watch for those fans who were present from both teams. Port Senior Angels get ready for Ont. playdowns In the final against Daly's of Michigan, Claire Reed Cassells held this strong team until the fourth inning as Daly's pushed in a run. Andrea Peters came in in relief but was unable to hold them and lost the final 4-0. A great team effort by Port Perry: as people and players were asking who and where was this team from. Port Perry is host to the Senior Women's Provincial on August 4,5,6 at Palmer Park. Port Perry's first game is Friddy, August 4th at 8:30pm vs. Toronto VM's.
