'Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, July 25, 1995 -- 25 'Puckrin named MoJack assistant coach During his hockey playing days Brett Puckrin alwaysiconsidered himself one of those "defensive defensemen," the kind that get their kicks keeping picks out of their goal. And he was good at iti too. This coming season, the 22- year old Port Perry native will have a chance to pass of what he knows to the bluelinefgorps of the Port Perry Junior C MoJacks. The club announced lat week that Puckrin will assume duties as an assistant coach to work with = the defense corps specifically and on team defense in general. { "This is a great chance to; give something "yback to "the organization," he said last week. Puckrin played a couple of seasons with the gregn and one as t white, includi p Last season, he was an assistant to Dave Barkey with the Port Perry Key-Bar Juveniles, a team that went to the all-Ontario finals. Puckrin knows what winning is all about. He was on the Key-Bar squad that won the all-Ontario two years ago and he also won an all-Ontario title at the Midget level. His .duties this fall as a defensive coach fit right into the overall plan by head coach Chic * Carnegie to put'a big stress on keeping pucks out-of the MoJack net. "We will be working on defense for the goaltender out to keep the goals (against) down," said Carnegie. Last season, the club finished with a respectable 3.5 goals average. Carnegie said the majority of the players expected to return this fall from last season's squad are "grinders," rather than goal scorers. He said the team will expect a lot of skating and hustle. "If they are not doing that, they won't be playing." . Puckrin said he'll be concentrating on developing systems for controlled break- outs, how to take out and neutralize rushing forwards at the blue line and and instilling a tough and aggressive approach that means "taking the man" at both ends of the rink. Puckrin, who is a sales agent with Coldwell Banker in Port Perry said he can't wait for the MoJack training 'camp to open on September 5. Jr. C fans will see more games and new teams Junior C hockey fans irf Port Perry wiljgpee some different teams at the Scugog Arena' this coming season. Murray Parliament, director of | ! operations for the MoJacks announced last week that each team in the Central League will play a home and home series with Picton,.Campbellford and Brighton of the Eastern Junior C League. . The inter-locking games with these three clubs are part of expanded schedule for the six teams in the Central League from 36 to 42 games this coming season. With Bowmanville Eagles dropping out of the Central League to play at the Junior B level, the teams competing this seasgn will be the MoJacks, Uxbridge Brhins, Lakefield Chiefs, Little Britain Merchants, Sutton Ice and Bobcaygeon Bullets. The expanded 42-game schedule and the inter-locking games with the eastern league clubs are not the only changes for the coming season. Only four teams will qualify for playoff action which Will make every game a bit more meaningful from the start of the season through to mid- February. And it should create plenty of fan interest if two or three clubs are in a race to make the final playoff berth. Once the playoff spots are determined at the end of the schedule, ithe first place team will play the fourth, while the secogd arfd third place squads hook up. Both will be best of seven affairs as will the final series to determine the Central League champion. The, MoJacks, under head coach Chic Carnegie and assistant Brett Puckrin will open training camp September 5 with 14 players from last year's squad eligible for another season. ModJacks will play their home games at the Scugog Arena on Sunday nights with faceoff at 7:00 PM. The team is coming off a decent year last season with 43 points and a second place finish. MoJacks defeated Sutton in the opening playoff round and lost to a strong Bowmanville team in the league final. Opening night for the MoJacks this coming" season will be October 1'against Sutton Ice. With the score notched at three apiece the Merchants defence came to life and they started to shut down the Vaughan batters only allowing one more run for the rest of the game. Meanwhile Scott's blast must have aroused the Merchant offence as they started to dominate the Vaughan pitching.
