Well, here are two more - total alkalinity and calcium hardness - and a definition of each. Total alkalinity is measured as bicarbonate content of the water. It creates a "buffer" or shock absorber, in the water, protecting it"from extreme fluctuations in pH. Your total alkalinity should probably be in. | the 80 to 150 ppm range for a plaster pool and 125-150 ppm for vinyl and all others. . To raise total alkalinity, use' BioGuard Balance Pak 100. In the pool, some of the product is converted to carbon dioxide (called carbonic acid in water), some is converted tq carbonate, and the rest remains as-bicarbonate. 'If anything acidic; such as rain, muriatic acid or BioGuard Lo 'N Slo is added to a pool, some af the bicarbonate is converted to carbon dioxide and alkalinity decreases, as does pH. If no alkalinity were present to be converted the pH would drop quickly, causing "pH bounce". Calcium hardness contributes to the overall water balance of the pool. It is measured as calcium carbonate. In a plaster pool, calcium hardness should be between 200-275 ppm, In a vinyl pool; calcium hardness should be between 175-225 ppm. Specifically, if there's too little calcium hardness the water becomes more "aggressive" to pool surfaces, fixtures and equipment, resulting in corrosion. Because plaster pool walls are particularly susceptible to etching, the pool water will actually pull calcium from the plaster to satisfy its demand if the calcium hardness is not-high enough. _ To raise calcium hardness, use BioGuard Balance Pak 300. Too much calcium can result in cloudy water and scaling of pool surfaces and equipment. As it forms, scale can pick up, dint and metals 'from the water and cause surface discoloration. Your BioGuard Authorized Pool & Spa Care Centre is an expert when it comes to total alkalinity and" calcium * hardness. planchardg "239 Queen Street Port Perry (905) 985-9746 » | BioGuard | Authorized Pool and Spa < Care Center EEXEEEXEEEE EEX EE EEE EERE
