Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, July 25, 1995 --5 Px A Dutch response to a veteran's return Editor's Note: Earlier this spring, Bob Healey of Port Perry attended the ceremonies in Holland to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the war and the role Canadian soldiers played in the liberation of that country. On May 10, he spoke to a group of grades 7 and 8 students in Witharen. Last week, Bob received a letter from * the teacher, Jan Doedens, and a translated report by two of the students. Following are the letter and Annie Wakeford (centre) has been recently installed as Deputy President of District 8 East, Rebekkah Lodge. Dear Mr. and Mrs. Healey, Here, I'll send you a summary of the reports which have been 'made by two children of group 7 and 8. The children of the class found these reports the best, so I have made a summary of it and translated into English. . I hope I did it good, so it can be placed in the newspaper. I hope you'll send us a copy of the message, that's the desire of the class. Healey, who was staying with the Buiter family in Vinkenbuurt, came this day with his wife at our school to tell his experiences of the war. He has liberated the cities of Nijmegen, Deventer and places near the Afsluitdike. Once, he was very, lucky: He and two other soldiers were lying in the woods, then there was shooting and the soldier in front of him and the one behind him have been killed. It was for him as being near the edge of the world. "I was lucky," Mr. Healey-said. It took him more than ten years to forget about the war. We can imagine that. During the war he lost more than 460 friends. When he told us that, we were frightened. Mr. Healey was an infantry- man in the Third Division. A Division is about 5000 soldiers. At the age.of 19 he started in 1994 as a voluntary training of about six months. From Canada, he went to' Scotland and' England. Then after an illness he went to France, Belgium and Holland and stayed in the 'area of Nijmegen. EY During the fights, he mostly sleeped in holes in the ground and that was of course very cold. And there*was always .-the'risk to be killed. After the war Mr. Healey had to got to Germany until June, 1946.He served the Army for more than two and a half years and had been fighting for more than eight months. It was an instructive morning. To thank him we offer him and his wife chocolate (Merci) and little pocket torch with the name of the school on it. Mr. and Mrs. Healey gave all the children of the school some sweets and we, children of group 7 and 8 also got a pin with the: Canadian flag on it. We found it very nice he was at our school.
