Daniels RESEARCH SUPPORTS BIBLICAL VIEW OF FAMILY Contemplating divorce or separation? Think again. Last week I referred to an article by social research analyst, Glenn Stanton, indicating studies show the traditional family. is the preferred model. Children raised in a home where mom and dad are committed to lifelong marital fidelity have a better chance at life. Stanton analyzed numerous studies conducted not by the "Religious Right," but by sociologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and social researcners from some of America's leading hospitals and universities. I have summarized some of Stanton's findings from his article "Guess What...God Knows Best" (Focus on the Family, August, 1995) Couples sustaining from sexual activity before marriage experience greater sexual satisfaction in marriage, with the highest rate of satisfaction found among those having had only one sexual partner. Cohabitation prior to marriage resulted in more adultery, alcohol and drug dependence, physical abuse and emotional problems. As for children, Stanton found the bulk of studies revealed that, "on average, children do better in all areas when raised by two married parents who live together". Dr. David Popenoe, noted family scholar of Rutgers University says, "I knew of few other bodies of data in which the weight of evidence is so decisively on one side of the issue. On the whole, for children, two-parent families are preferable..If our prevailing views on family structure hinged solely on scholarly evidence, the current debate never would have arisen in the first place." The Bible has always promoted monogamous lifelong marriages with mom and dad raising their children in a warm, nurturing environment, so this is a cade of the social sciences recognizing what Christians have always understood Everyone of us ought to spare no effort encouraging families to stay N\ ( HAPPY 2nd BIRTHDAY ALEX August 17th, 1995 Love - Mommy & Daddy, and Brother Ryan ) HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY SABREENA August 12th, 1995 * together. Churches need to help families constructively manage the stresses of contemporary living. Far more attention should be given to preparing young men and women for marriage. One of the Psalms of ancient Israel addresses the need to rely upon Goda one seeks to build a family. "Unless, the LORD builds the house, its builders labour in vain" (Psalm 127:1 NIV). The greatest need in building stable families is the need to bring God back into the picture. He graciously provides the inner strength to face each day with its tensions and stresses. What place does he hold in your family? If you are already divorced, or if you are contemplating div here is still hope for the future. Search out a Christian'friend who truly believes the Bible and ask for guidance in finding God's plan for your life If you would like a copy of Stanton's article, please send a , SASE requesting the article "Guess What...God Knows Best" to Rev.
