Gators, who finished the season in first place with 12-2-1 record downed rival IGA Flames 3-1 last Wednesday night at the Scugog to take the best of three championship two games to one. It was anything but easy for the Gators as the Flames were in this game right down to the final minute when a goal by Brad Menzies from Dave Burnett made it 3-1 and gave the Gators the all-important insurance marker. Gators opened the scoring in the final' with about six minutes gone in the first'period. This writeup is brought to you by Peer Pressure. The Merchants first game of the tournament was against Elmira. The boys made a total of five errors in this game and along with the eight walks they gave up Elmira only needed a few key hits and this game was out of reach. Hitting for the Merchants in a losing cause were Jason Best and Brad Monsma who each had two singles and a walk, Ryan Williamson with two singles and Doug Short picking up a single. With the first game loss behind them, they now took on New Hamburg. The local boys were more fired up for this game and it showed as_by the fifth inning they held onto an 8-4 lead. The sweltering heat started to wear .down the Merchants and New Hamburg took full advantage of it and tied things up at ten apiece at the end of six. New Hamburg didn't stop here as in the top of the seventh inning they took a 12-10 lead. The Merchants didn't want to be put out of the tournament two straight 80 with one out in the bottom of the seventh, they dug down deep to make a comeback. After back to back singles and a walk the bases were loaded and the stage was set. Up to the plate stepped Ryan Moynes with only one thing on his mind - "Get a hit". The first pitch was strike one, the second pitch, strike two and things were looking quite dire now for Ryan! But this isn't the Mighty Casey strikes out story but rather the Mighty Ryan story who blasts the next pitch deep to right centre field clearing the bases and giving the Merchants a 13-12 win. Hitting in this game were Ryan Williamson with two singles and a double, Brad Monsma with two singles, Jason Best with a homerun, Marc Versage with a single and a walk, Doug Short with two singles and a walk, Jon Froats with three singles, Clay Brown with a single, Scott Jeffery picked up three singles and two walks, Ryan Hawkins had a single and The Mighty Ryan Moynes had a walk, two singles and a clutch double. The Merchants now moved on to play against Fergus. This game was close throughout with both teams battling not only each other but the high temperatures as well. At the end of six innings Fergus was holding onto a slim 4-3 lead. The top of the seventh inning was to be the Merchants dowrifall as once again a couple of errors cost them a couple of runs and now they were down to their last three outs trailing 6-3. History seemed set to repeat itself as they Merchants once again loaded the bases with one out. However, this time a miracle was not to be found and the Merchants fell by the 6-3 count and they were out of the tournament. Hitting in this game were Jason Best and Ryan Williamson each with two singles and a double, Doug Short with two singles, Jon Froats and Ryan Hawkins with a single each and Derek Tindall picked up a walk. The Merchants pitching staff of Marshal McQuaid, Clay Brown and Jon Froats are to be commended for their efforts in this tournament. These three young men all had to battle not only opposing batters but a hot, sunny day with a humidex of 40 degrees C. and they gave it 100% all the time. Good Job, men! Deserving congratulations is the Merchants version of Roberto Alomar, Jason Best, who once again displayed his talents as he won the Gold Glove Competition that was held between the boys first gnd second games. Thé Merchants will wrap up thejr season next weekend at Durham Fields in Oshawa as they play in their league tournament. Kevin Thrasher's doorstep to cash a rebound off the stick of Warren Geer. The Flames bounced back late in the period as James Parker and Kevin Wilson combined to score off a rebound with netminder Wayne Lown down in (the crease. Both squads pressed during the second period with the score tied , 1-1 and Lown came up with his biggest stop of the contest, sliding to his right to block a shot off a clear break-away. About a minute later, Warren Geer responded for the Gators off a set-up by Willy Edwards to 5 what proved to be the nning goal. The teams were at five-aside with 1:09 left when Menzies cashed in the insurance marker. Action in this one was fast- paced with both teams putting plenty of pressure on the goaltenders who came up with numerous fine stops to keep the score close. Tempers flared slightly in the first period, but the teams stuck to hockey. Late in the second, Flames Jarrett Harman and Gators Greg Warriner were tossed for dropping the gloves and throwing punches at centre court. The Flames got a jump on the Gators in this series as they took game one by a 2-1 margin on August9. After John Lally gave Gators a 1-0 lead with an un-assisted Wolf Run Mark Mooney js 1995 Club champion at the Wolf Run Golf Club near View Lake. Mooney took the championship with a 36-hole score of 147 (76-71) in the steaming heat and humidity over the weekend. He was five shots better than runner-up Andy Matthews who cafded 152 (75-77) over this marker, Flames tallied two un- answered goals for the victory. Paul Beare was set up by Kevin Wilson and James Parker got the winner with Rick Cormier and Kelly Ryan getting the assists. Game two was a real nail-biter as the Gators pulled out a 3-2 victory to tie the series, thanks to the scoring of defenseman Phil McBride who found the range with an un-assisted marker with 20 seconds left in regulation for the 3-2 win. McBride also notched the tying goal for the Gators in this one with help from veterans Lally and Menzies Warren Geer opened the scoring from Warriner and Dave Culbert and then the Flanfes went ahead 2-1 on markers by Jarrett Harman from Parker and Kevin Vivian, and Wilson from Parker and Harman. It's not surprising the best of three series for the league championship between these teams went right down to the wire as they had battled through the 15-game regular schedule. Gators finished on top with 12- * 2-1 record with the Flames hot on their heels with a record of 11-31. Emiels Place and the Raiders finished with identical records of 8-6-1; the Bandits were 2-11-2 on the season and the Big V X-Men with numerous young players in the line-up were 2-13. champs long-and challenging course. In the Second Flight, Doug Parker placed first with a 36- hole score of 174, while Ross Davis was second with 181. Barry McIntyre was the top junior with a very fine score of 148 (75-73). Kari Clayton was the top girl with 208: and Matthew Welts top Bantam with 218. The heat and humidity didn't bother this foursome as they finished on top in the annual Port Perry MoJack Golf tournament at Sunnybrae. In a best ball format the team finished 18 under par, (not bad) with 14 birdies, 2 eagles and 2 pars. From left Grant Menzies, Derek Beattle, Cralg Menzies and Todd Menzies. Runner up at 13 under par was the team of Kevin Murray, Mike Noonan, H. O'Connell and T. Helmer. Clair Cornish was closest to the pin, and Chris Jamleson had the longest drive.
