wy" 22 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, August 22, 1995 => Junior Merchants find the going tough This sports report for the Junior Merchants is sponsored by Ernst and Young, Precision Construction, Taylor Fuels and Mike Tobin Photography. Talk about coming down to earth after playing the top teams in the league! Last week's report talked about the Scarborough Royals and this week's action was against Bradford and Greenbank. The Bradford Sox Senior Team was in town on Tuesday and represented themselves well in both the hitting and pitching departments. They went home with a 5-0 win. Bradford's Jackson allowed only five runners to reach base safely, while striking out 12 Port Juniors: Ryan Burkholder and Rich Burkholder, Card, Cochrane reached with singles, Redmen trail in lacrosse final Six Nation Chiefs have opened a 1-0 lead in games over the Brooklin Redmen in the O.L.A. major lacrosse best of seven final. Chiefs defeated Redmen 17-9 in the series opener last Friday evening in Oshweken, thanks in large part to a ning point game by Paul Gait who fired six goals and chipped in with three assists. Gary Gait led the Redmen scoring with five goals with singles from Rob Hannah, Doug Noganosh, Tom Wreggett and Paul St. John. ' Chiefs never trailed in this one as they opened an 8-2 lead after the first and upped it to 12-8 after the second. Paddy O'Toole started in net for the Redmen but was replaced for part of the first and second periods by Paul Mootz. Game two in the series was in Iroquois Park Arena on Monday night, with game three in Oshweken Wednesday and game 4 back in Whitby August 25 with faceoff at 8:30 PM. Redmen got into the final with a come-from-behind win over Brampton. Trailing at one point in this series three games to one, Redmen fought back to force game seven August 16 in front of 2,000 fans in Iroquois Park Arena. Gary Gait fired four goals and Jason Crosbie had a pair as the Redmen edged the Excelsiors 9-7 to earn a berth in the final against Six Nations. Port did not play, its usual sharp defensive game, and three errors early in the game resulted in two unearned runs. Card relieved Venning in the fourth inning and shut down Bradford, allowing no runs for the remainder of the game. Venning and Card combined for eight strikeouts, one walk, seven hits and three earned runs. On Thursday, the Junior Merchants visited our northern relatives, the Greenbank Gamblers and again faced a tough senior team who had good ' pitching and timely hitting. Port only allowed six hits, but unfortunately two were home runs which staked Greenbank to an early lead and an eventual 4- 0 win. The only Juniors who reached base safely were Rich Burkholder, Empringham, Moase with singles, and Venning with a walk. An unusual occurance also saw both Port pitchers reach base on hit pitches, but fortunately no one was hurt. Card pitched six innings, striking out eight, walking two, allowing six hits and four earned runs. Even though the Junior Merchants lost both games, there is always a silver lining for every cloud. Facing senior pitchers will assist the Juniors hitters as they prepare for the Provincial Tournament scheduled for this weekend. Goreski scattered 7 Oshawa hits but Ed Christopher and Ray White twice had back to back hits to score the 2 Oshawa runs. The Gamblers had six hits off Baker and scored a first inning run as Don Beaton singled home Trevor Till who had doubled. The key hit in the game came J SCUG0G YOUTH SOCCER CLUB ) SCUGOG YOUTH SOCCER CLUB General Meeting from Byron Baranieski who lace a line drive single to left center field to score Brian Till and Pete Oosterholt with the- game winning runs. Thursday night in Greenbank saw the return to the pitching rubber of Byron Baranieski who had seen little pitching action the past three weeks as he nursed a sore shoulder. The Port Perry Juniors had reason to wish he was still unavailable for pitching duty as he tossed a neat two hit shutout to pace the Gamblers to a 4-0 victory. Brad Moase and Rich Burkholder had the Port Perry hits while Jeff Card on the Port mound held Greenbank to only ANNUAL AGENDA : @ Reports re the 1995 Season © General Business @ Election of Officers for 1996 At the SCUGOG SOCCER FACILITY CLUBHOUSE Old Simcoe Road TUESDAY, AUGUST 29th, 1995 - 6:30 PM @ Propaghis to change constitution 48 hours prior to the meeting by PLAN TO ATTEND # Please note that proposals to change constitution must be in the hands of Roy Cowling, six hits.
