Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, August 22, 1995 -- 25 44a Bantams bounce back for'lop-sided win "The Port Perry Merchant Bantam fastball club wound up their regular season schedule on Wednesday August 16 with a convincing 16-1 victory over Vaughan. This writeup is brought to you by Kirby Structures. Things didn't start out too well for the hometown Merchants as Vaughan's first batter doubled and scored when their number two hitter followed with a single giving Vaughan an early 1-0 lead. That was all the offence that Vaughan could muster as Jon Froats, Marshal McQuaid and Clay Brown all shared in the pitching duties allowing only two more hits the rest of the game. The Merchants go things going in their first at bat as lead off batter Scott Jeffery hit an in the park home run to tie the game at one apjece. Scott's hustle IR FIX IT around the bases inspired: the boys and they rallied for three more runs in the first inning to take a commanding 4-1 lead. The second inning had the boys continge their hot hitting "as they picked up another two runs to now extend their lead to 6-1. The third inning was the clincher for the Merchants as they batted around collecting another six runs to make it now 12-1. The big blow in this inning was a booming homerun over the fence off the bat of Marshal McQuaid. The fourth inning was'a quiet one as the merchants failed to score but in the fifth it was. Doing the hitting for the Merchants were; Scott Jeffery with a homerun and a single, Jon Froats who almost got the cycle as he walked, singled, doubled and tripled, Jason Best continued to swing a hot bat picking up two doubles and a walk, Marc Versage with a booming homerun blast, two doubles and a single, Doug Short with a single, Brad Monsma was a welcome. sight coming back off the Disabled List picked 'up a single and a walk, Ryan Hawkins tripled, doubled and walked, Ryan Moynes and Derek Tindall showed good eyes at the plate as they each picked up a walk, Owen St John had a double, Ryan Williamson kicked in with a single and Marshal McQuaid did the homerun trot! With the win in the books it mean} the end of the regular season schedule for the Merchants who wound up with a very respectahle 12 wins against five losses giving them a .706 winning percentage. Four of the teams losses came in May and they finished off with an eight game winning streak. The league will wrap things up at a 'final tournament to be held in Oshawa on' August 26 and 27. The Merchant ball club would like to thank all the faithful fans that came out to cheer us on at our home games - it was truly appreciated.
