healthstyles deb mcdonald It's the rare child who doesn't get hungry between meals and desire snacks. Small children, after all, have small stomachs relative to their caloric needs and can't hold enough food to sustain them for 5 to 6 hours. Also, few can consume enough calories in just 3 meals to meet their daily energy requirement. It's no surprise then, that about a fifth of children's calories are consumed as " snacks. But snacks don't have to be empty calories (calories with little nutritive value). Snacks can be an important "supplement to your child's diet providing some essential nutrients. To achieve this, parents have to take a firm stand on what is and what is not allowed and when. That doesn't necessarily mean no sweets at all. Most children adore sweets; they come by it naturally. But they will be far better off not thinking that every meal must end with deserts such as cake, cookies or ice 'cream or that every between meal hunger pang must be satisfied with a sweet. Better choices include fruit (fresh, especially this time of year, or canned in water or own juice or light syrup), cheese and crackers, yogurt, half a sandwich with milk or juice, a bowl of cold unsweetened cereal and milk, popcorn *® A Can't think ,. . of the appropriate words? Dried fruits are a nutritious snack too, but very hard on the teeth. They are best served when teeth can be brushed soon after eating.
