Last year, members of Township council were furidus over the wording of a large sign posted during the Fair which accused the Township of wanting to sell the 22-acre , grounds in the northwest corner of Port Perry. And sweat shirts saying "we love Port Perry Fair," or "Save Sour Fairgrounds" were hot sellers. This year, there were no such signs at the Fair. "We (the Fair Board directors) thought about putting the sign up "again," president Paul Christie told the Citizen in an interview late Monday afternoon as the final events at the Fair were winding down. "But we felt there is no point in stirrig up a hornet's nest again," he said with a smile. At the heart of the controversy id the lease for the Township-owned 22 acre Fairgrounds. The current lease runs out in July 1997, and efforts to re-negotiate a new lease have bogged Family Restaurant down over a single issue: a so-called termination clause. Some members of council have demanded a clause in the lease giving the Township the right to terminate the lease. The Fair Board has been opposed to this clause, especially if it is a short-term termination. Mr. Christie said now that all the work for this year's Fair is behind them, there likely will be a meeting of the Fair Board members to determine what course of action they want with regards to the terms of a new lease. ' "We want to have this done before the (Fair Board) annual meeting in January," he said. And he expects to start negotiations with the Township council before the end of the year: Mr. Christie said the Board wants a new lease of at least ten years duration. And if the Township ever wants the lease terminated, it must be for "compelling" reasons for the entire community. And before the lease is ever terminated, the Township must carry out extensive surveys to determine if this is what the community wants. Commenting on the Fair this year, Mr. Christie said the crowds will not reach last year's all time record attendance, thanks mostly to a severe rainstorm that swept across Scugog Sunday morning. The always popular harnéss racing card went ahead when the weather cleared in the afternoon, but the crowds stayed away. Attendance was much better on Saturday and Labour Day Monday, he said. Organizers were also disappointed with the size of the crowd in the entertainment tent on Sunday night where the well known Canadian band Jughead provided the entertainment. "We can't seem to get a crowd out on Sunday night. This is something we have to look at for next year," he said. . : On the bright side, the Holstein Show attracted a large number of entries, as did the heavy horse pulls 'Monday afternoon. ) REAKFAST AGE oer SPECIAL 71011 AM QB career =O) a SZ TILE a or SEHOPTS pobre 985-4707 pn Galore & More 154 QUEEN STREET, PORT PERRY 985-4808 Ton PERRY = 175 Perry St, PORT PERRY 985-8645 J It's casual wan El tl MEN'S JEANS 501 , 550, THE hy | 019.012 Rt iocEy [qelRR Ia lel] HA (Y fi BEEROWNS JEANS & CASUAL - = .
