healthstyles deb mcdonald Canadian children are a pretty healthy lot for the most part. But there seems to be a disturbing trend which has some health | experts and parents worried. Obesity has increased to almost 25% in girls (up from 14% in 1981) and to 26% in boys (up from 18% in 1981), according to a study sponsored by Health Canada. Overweight children, like adults are more likely to suffer more from physical problems such as high blood pressure, respiratory illnesses, diabetes and orthopedic problems. And just like adults, they face the social, emotional and psychological challenges of being fat in a society that values thinness. We can only speculate why children are getting fatter. Eating habits play a part, but it appears that the lack of physical activity is at the top of the list. It is estimated that children today are almost half as active as their parents were as children. In large urban centres, fears about safety have parents keeping kids inside, where they watch T.V. and play video games. At school, gym and physical activity programs arefnot as central to education as i once were. What can be done about "this unhealthy trend? The answer lies in prevention and early intervention. Healthy eating and activity patterns must be established early in childhood. If your child isn't overwejght, it's easy to overlook the 'importance of these patterns. / But the habits developed in childhood are critical to a healthy weight in the long run. That is way all children in a family, fat or thin, need to learn how to choose healthy foods, eat appropriate quantities of food, and enjoy sweets and snacks in (Highway 12 at Myrtle) New Crop of APPLES PEARS STORE HOURS: Monday to Thursday 9 to 7 ' Friday 9AM to 8 PM Saturday & Sunday 9to 6 LOSE 'WEIGHT HEALTHSTYLE Way! no meal replacements w personal menu plan one to one counselling proven weight loss Call Deb Today! 98559372 Losing Weight doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg! moderation.
