" cal = a, 2-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, Septemberd?2, 1995 Council tip-toes into gun control debate Scugog Township council has tip-toed cautiously into the debate over Canada's controversial gun law. Council agreed Monday to support part of a resolution from the powerful Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, (OFAH) an organization that has lobbied furiously against the passage of Bill C-68. Council agreed with the OFAH that the Bill imposes needless burdens on law-abiding Canadians such as universal firearms registration and licencing, and that the Senate should send the Bill back tq the House of Commons for major changes. However, councillors declined to support a clause stating "opposition to any 'measures that prohibit or ban firearms that are presently, or prior to January 1, 1995,'legally owned by registered owners in Canada." "I would want it unlawful (in Canada) to own or import an AK 47 rifle or other types of assault rifles," said Ward one rep Doug Moffatt. Ward 3 councillor Ken Gadsden agreed. While stating he is not an expert on guns, he too declared that certain kinds of assault rifles should not be open to public ownership. Ward 5 councillor Karen Puckrin argued that council Traffic study From page one completed as soon as possible. And council agreed to take a look at the report and if the solutions are acceptable, proceed with the re-zoning for the At one point during the discussions Monday afternoon, it was suggested that a traffic signal at the intersection of Perry and Simcoe 'Streets might be one solution to any problems. should throw its support behind the entire OFAH resolution. The Bill, she said, is going to make it illegal to own certain types of firearms that were bought legally by law abiding citizens who have already had them registered. In a covering letter to Scugog Township, the OFAH said Bill C-68 if passed without changes, means police forces will have to spend short resources on needless registrations and checks on law abiding citizens. The OFAH says further re: tape and administration in & nation-wide registry of all firearms "cannot' be justified i in terms of reduction of crime or improved public safety." Scugog council's partial support of the OFAH resolution _ will be forwarded to the Senate committee that will study the Bill in detail later this month. project. | Are you Self Employed?
