RHI, B PONTIAC BUICK LIMITED Sales Department OPEN Monday to Thursday Yours in Education ' by Bobbie Drew, Trustee A recent announcement from the Provincial Ministry of Education and Training has left a number of Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten parents in a quandary. The announcement was the cancellation of a Junior Kindergarten all day pilot programme. This announcement has nothing to do with the Durham Board's programmes for either J.K. or S.K. Our programmes are funded as part of thé regular elementary school programme and have nothing to do with the pilot programmes being cancelled by the Ministry. Parents are advised to send their children to school according to the instructions they were given at registration in the spring or over the summer months. This September, J.K. in Scugog will be available at R.H. Cornish Public School, Epsom P.S. and Greenbank P.S. Those schools will provide J.K. all day on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Senior Kindergarten programme will be all day Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. In September 1996 we plan to open JK. in Prince Albert P.S., Cartwright P.S. and S.A. Cawker PS. Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten are legislated programmes and must be implemented for all students by September 1997 unlegs the government introduces and passes an amendment to change the Education Act. If you have any questions and/or concerns about these programmes [ urge you to contact our Early Years Officer, Pat Prentice at 1-905- 666-6921. On September 6, the Ontario School Board Reduction Task Force came out with their interim report. This is the task force that was to research and report on how the school boards could be amalgamated to reduce the number of boards in Ontario by approximately 50%. Although their interim report suggests that they leave the boundaries of the Durham Public and Separate Boards status quo, they do recommend that the number of trustees in boards of the size of the Public Board be reduced to 11. In comparison to this proposed reduction, Durham's regional government operates with 32 councilors to govern a budget smaller than the Durham Board's.and an area just slightly larger, The Durham Board is the second largest employer in the Region. There are some positive aspects to the interim report, though and I urge parents of / school children to read the report that will be sent out by the province to all schools this week..
