Touring London, Scotland and Wales for a week before the Jamboree, she trayelled through Germany, Switzerland and France, all part of the Sluts' European and British tours. At the Jamboree she slept in a tent but while 'on tour' she had the luxury of hotels. The Grade 12 PPHS student told the Citizen she had a wonderful time and "could have 'stayed another month". Paying for a third of her trip, the balance was paid for by Whitby District. While she tried all sorts of food from different countries, she was a true teenager, and always managed to find a MacDonald's in every country visited. "I'd recommend anyone to go" Melissa said. While this was Melissa's first time attending a World Scouting event, she was at the Canadian Scouting Jamboree in Calgary a couple of years ago. To attend, you have to be selected from Scouts Canada. Although Melissa was the only girl from the district to go, several throughout the province were there, also. Guiding and scouting have taught Melissa a lot and the seventeen year old only has positive things to say about the program. "A lot of people think scouting is for people 'who have no life' and are a bit 'wussy', but it isn't that way at all" she said. "It's a big challenge". Ovet the years she's learned how to camp, survived cold nights in the wilderness, slept in very frigid weather and has gone white water canoeing, as well as rock climbing. She's had to use her survival instincts on several occasions.
